New chain, new cassette and a new cranny ring. Chain slipping over the cogs under load in the middle ring (not between gears or in the granny ring). Can't tell if it's slipping at the cassette end or chainset end. Any thoughts on how to identify the problem before I buy a new middle chainring (which looks in pretty good condition TBH).

Does it slip in all rear gears? The fact that it doesn't slip in the granny would strongly suggest that it's your middle ring that is worn, although you could have a stiff chain link. Powerlink or pin? Depending on which rear gears it slips in, another possibility is that you've fitted the loose cassette sprockets back to front.
You probably need to buy a new middle ring. If it's not slipping in the granny then this is a dead give away. Even though the wear isn't that visible it'll still be there.
YOu could buy a new middle, see if it improves and if you didn't need it then just keep it until you do or sell it on.
Chances are it's the middle ring.
see how far you can pull the chain away from the ring at the the front - new chain on unworn chainring should hardly pull away at all

Was the middle ring, thanks all. I didn't know you could get such bad chainslip on the chainrings..
Had the same thing, chain slipping, turned chain around ,(it does work), replaced rear cassette, stil slipping tried new cassete with old chain slipping,repalced middle ring, still slipping.
Finally put chain on middle ring to middle ring, but front wheel against wall, and applied pressure to the pedals, result it was the free hub that was slipping, easily replaced and thanks to shimano, was cheaper to buy a new hub and freewheel, as just opposed to free hub.
Tried old chain and cassette back on new free hub and worked great so had a spare cassete and chain for quite a few months.
