If one takes a look at the UK on Google Maps, at a large scale, there are two greyed out areas.

One bordered by Didcot and Swindon to the North, Reading to the East, Anodver to the South and Devizes to the West.

The other is bordered by Barnard Castle and Kirkby Stephen to the North, Richmond and Leyburn to the East, Skipton to the South and Kendal to the West.

Zooming in to other areas, there are some smaller ones that are greyed out, mostly aviation related, but, oddly, Kirtlington Polo ground. However, when switching to aerial view, they’re freely visible. Was thinking these bigger areas could have been military, but seeing as the southern one doesn’t include the Plain or Porton, that wouldn’t seem right.

Anyone know why these areas are greyed out?

    You mean this?

Thats Yorkshire Dales National Park boundary – no idea why it’s grey and most other ones are green, though.

The Wiltshire one is explained by the text between Marlborough and Newbury. “North Wessex Downs AONB”

Odd. Went back to have a look at Rachel’s suggestion above, but the grey’s gone!

    Where’s my tin foil hat?

However, that looks right. National Parks.

    Thanks, all!

There was a fellow in Brighton a few years ago who reported a vortex to another dimension on Hanover Road. It’s probably just something of that sort.
