  • Can I use a 10sp cassette?

Currently have a 9sp cassette on Mavic Aksium road wheels. Got the chance of some 105 10 spd shifters at bargain price, but currently run 9 spd. I'm not bothered about the extra gear but it means I can upgrade the shifters from Sora to 105. With the price of a new 105 cassette on top, the shifters still work out a good deal.

Can I simply buy a 10 spd cassette so the shifters are usable? (and chain)

Am I right in thinking the gaps between the sprockets are smaller/thinner sprockets rather than the cassette being wider????

    Thanks.

You will need a 10 speed chain. You may need to change the front mech to the 5600FD.

It will fit on the same freehub body, all you'll really need is a new chain. Your chainings should work ok still.

10 speed Shimano road cassettes are 1mm narrower than a 9spd cassette. You should get a spacer with your new cassette that you mount on the freehub before putting the cassette on. Shifter, chain & cassette should be all you need.
