  • Can I ask about back ends?

    Been keeping eye out for spare set of wheels and the ones that come up all seem to have a back wheel for 142mm drop outs … is this the most common size for 29er back ends?
    I have access to a few bikes of various vintages and they’re all 135. Including my fairly new full susser.
    It’s been perplexing me, so explain away folks 🙂

    Up to 2012 pretty much all 135QR or maxle
    2012-2016 mostly 142×12
    2016 onwards – boost becoming dominant

    Many wheels sold with 142mm rear are easy to switch to 135 though.

    Thanks!

    How? Is it just spacers?

    end caps that you press in normally, got a particular hub in mind?

    FWIW I have just committed to a 142mm rear, non-boost bike and it’s become clear that the industry is wholesale deserting the standard – everything’s gonna be boost from 2018.

    I don’t mind this, saved a few quid and it’ll stop me swapping bikes again on impulse.

    142 = 135 with a thru axle.

    Just checked the RM website and my full sus is 142! I’m sure my calipers measured it at 135. Hmm.
    In mind – nearly bought a set of Crossmax XLs for my son’s Spesh Carve… bailed out cos the rear was 142.

    Crossmax XLs should come with both sets of end caps, I switch mine between 135QR and 142×12 for use on different bikes.

    Yep across the dropouts the width is the same, you don’t get any extra clearance etc with 142 over 135.
