CTC have a 'heretics' forum where this sort of activity gets discussed, I understand.

And/or google 'shimergo'Posted 6 months ago # -
right so it seems like what I actually need are 10 speed Campag Ergos and these will shift a shimano mech over a shimano 8 speed cassette perfectly!
simple, except I sold my spare pair of 10 speed ergos back in the summer!!!!!

Can you not just change the internal rachet for a 10spd one? did that with my Campy downtube shifters.

I have 8 spd campag shifters and works well with a campag 8 speed rear mech and 7 speed shimano cassette (as the 7 speed shimano cassette has the same spacing as a 8 speed campag one)
I think with the 8 shim cassette you would need a widget to change the shift ratios:

Called a shift mate:

Or you can do a bodge with the cable clamp position IIRC

Used to run campag 10's onto a dura ace 8 rear mech on a winter hack but found the cheapo camapg levers a bit fragile for a winter bike and ended up getting cheap shimano 8 speed sti's, i think it was these;

but you'll have to check its for a pair, they've been fine

SJS Cycles sell the J-Tech Shiftmate (I think its called) basically a little pulley that hangs off the back of the mech (like the old Avid Rollamajigs) to convert cable pull ratios. I use one to run 10spd Campag shifters and mech on a Shimano 10spd mech. Works a charm.
Edit: about 3 posts too slow....

J-Tech Shiftmate
Yup thats the one or a bodge like my link above will also do but probably a little be more temperamental:

I may be clutching at straws here but i'm sure there used to be a faff you could do where if you clamped the cable round the anchor bolt in a certain way you could get it to work. Kinger on here tried it but it was a few years back. I'd have a look on Sheldon Brown's site too or ask on their forum.

Easy. I did it just this morning. Its a 2 minute job. I had to raid a scrap mech to get the little clamping thingy but that was the hardest part. Look at the photo above of the mech. Mount the cable as in the pic. Works first time. Must admit to not worrying for years and have done a few in 8,9, and 10 speed, but this time I was using a near new mech which is more fussy. If there is any wear in the system you may well find it's all a bit slicker as that takes into account the slight differences in cable movement. Some say that wear screws things. I find the opposite. Key words to look at are Shimergo, or try Sheldon Brown.
You do not need to bother with 10 speed shifters and if your Ergos are older they are nicer anyway.Posted 6 months ago # -
I have exactly this on my road bike. 9 speed campy shifters and shimano 600 rear mech on 8-speed cassette. Shimergo cable clamp. Works like a charm!
These links are good:
