I did similar on my Ixus; no downsides that I’ve found. The Ixus mod boots off the SD when you switch it on though, so it’s a non-permanent change, easy to revert if you don’t like it.

I’ve done the same as Cougar to my Ixus. Found it used the battery a bit quicker, but some nice features.

It’s a bit different to the CHDK hack I think as it actually changes the firmware on the camera and doesn’t just load off the card.

I did it a while ago, gives you better quality video and manual control ov the video exposure, shutter speed etc – not sure if there have been other developments since. Worth doing I would say and I’ve had no issues since.

Yeah, RAW is the big one, lots of other gubbins too.
