  • Cambridge to London road ride – any route advice?

    Morning all,

Planning a Sunday morning road ride with a few friends. Given the forecast 15-30 mph northerlies, the current plan is to train to Cambridge and ride back to North London.

Any ideas for scenic routes, villages to aim for/through? Keeping off the busiest roads.

    Thanks loads for any help,

    Ed

this is an approximate route of the annual Dunwich Dynamo:

a semi-organised night ride from London out to the Suffolk coast.

However it avoids most of the busy roads and is a nice route – my best guess would be to head out towards Haverhill then south to Great Dunmow and follow it back in. Through Epping is fine, getting into London can be a bit mental but that’s true no matter which way you go.

cheers crazylegs, might do some of that backwards if the wind shifts. Good to have that anyway, I’ve always fancied that ride, but not necessarily when everyone else is doing it!

I’ve done this route (or very similar) before, and it was quite nice. Only iffy bit is the off-road section (Mardock’s farm) – a mile or two of quite bumpy singletrack. My roadie handled it just fine, you just need to stay light on the way down 🙂

This is the route I use when I bike up from down South to Cambridge way. It’s all pretty quiet roads, really enjoy it (no records on Strava mind!)

    Brilliant,

Thanks Will, Thanks Sam, I thought for a while I’d have to plan my own bike ride!

Great to have something to start with, much appreciated. I might even try creating a gpx file, get my money’s worth out of this Garmin Edge thingummy.

You’re welcome. If it’s any use, here is the same route in Garmin Connect. You should be able to save it as your own course and then edit the start and end points to suit:

I’ve done it quite a few times and it is lovely. I recommend skill wills route joining up from Cambridge. First time I did it I just asked for the walking route on my iPhone back to London and came up trumps

Very quiet. Some nice villages and enough pubs to stop at if you wish too

You can also join the lee valley from ware to get passed the a10/m25 section, something I would heartily recommend

Happy days, thanks Will! All adapted and swapped round in G connect.

Might consider the Lee Valley alternative, will depend on warmth and timing, I think. I’s going to be a cold one!
