What are the very best non compressible brake cables.
Rebuilding the BB7 ed CX and if the cables are being replaced I might as well add decent ones. Or should I assume that the old ones have had all the squish squished out of them?

Brake cables are designed to compress. It aids modulation. Gear cables have no squish so i guess you could use 5mm gear outer. The 4mm stuff would be too narrow. I would just go with the usual Jagwire or Fibrax break outer.

Wary of gear cable, I have had it start to bulge under pressure. Not split as yet but it looked likely.

No, brake outers do compress more than gear outers, but that’s a side effect of stopping them splitting under high load, rather than a desirable feature. Don’t use gear outers for brakes.

I have Road BB7s which I’ve always found a bit squidgy. I spent money on Avid Flak Jackets, but they didn’t make a great difference.
