Hi I am converting my road bike to drop handlebars. This has been built up using various spare bits and bobs from a 80’s (I think) coppi frame with braze on down tube tabs.

Looking on chainreaction eg i can see shimano R400 and dura-ace 7700 shifters. The main difference i gather is that the latter is indexed or friction, and, while i would probably prefer indexed shifters but i am not sure whether they would work with the sram x4 or 5?? rear mech.

So, firstly would the SIS indexed system work with sram? Also, are friction shifters ok anyway as this would be 30 quid rather than 47+??
