Got to bleed my XT M775 brakes as might have a leak and was wondering if i can use other hydraulic mineral oil for this rather than getting another mortgage for shimano stuff! Any help welcome, any problems with XT brakes??.

Don’t get the halfrauds one, nearly killed a set of saints with so called mineral oil! No idea what it was but it wasn’t mineral oil that’s for sure.

Mineral oil is mineral oil. LMH as used in citroens should be fine.

Castrol LHM. Used on several sets with no issues over 8 years.

Protip: sort the leak before attempting to bleed 😉

    Sunflower oil works well 😉
    only pence per litre too

long story short, problem with brakes mid-ride resulting in loss of oil…
no bike shops about, litre of sunflower from the closest corner shop
    bled on the trail.

Worked perfectly, actually stayed in there for 6 months of regular riding before I was bothered to flush and change it.
No ill affects, probably not recommended though

litre of shimano stuff costs marginally more than one of their 50ml bottles, doesnt go off or absorb water like DOT stuff so it’ll keep and is the same as the stuff thats already in it. Ive got 2 sets of shimano and have had to bleed a couple of times (trimmed hoses, removed caliper to route hose through new frame etc) so I’ve had use out of it, and given the money we spend on bikes and bikes parts, petrol driving to ride venues, pasties etc etc I dont think the little extra for Shimano over generic is worth worrying about.

rear caliper was leaking when i got my brakes (from halfrauds)
tightened the 2 halves of the caliper together, topped up with 3 in 1 oil.
still working fine, that was 2008.

I got some Stendec mineral oil from CRC, it seems to work as well as the Shimano original.

Seriously, ANY oil that is branded is bike specific, more than likely isn’t. The only bike specific thing about it is the exorbitant price they charge for it.
