Got myself a nice black eye on Wednesday night, and since then noticed I’ve got a tiny black eye floater thing in my vision on the same side. It’s gotten worse today, and is just there constantly. It’s getting really annoying, keep thinking it’s an insect or something.

Will be going to the doctors in a day or two when I get the chance, but until then I was wondering if anyone could put my mind at rest, or give me an idea for how to get rid of it myself? Or tell me to make a will…

    Detached retina?

i thought floaters were very common anyway

Seem to recall having blood floating around in my eye after my corneal transplant and it meant nothing – just a scab you can see tbh.

I think, given how sensitive eyes are, you might want to see someone sooner rather than later if you are concerned – call NHS direct for example

If it’s just a floater then it’ll most likely go by itself. They are very common but in some people more than others. The fact that it appeared to come when you had some trauma does suggest a doctors visit is in order though.

I’d go for an emergency appointment at an opticians if you can. They will a) be trained in all manner of eye alchemy and b) have all the kit to have a proper look in you eye (your GP almost certainly will not).

If they find anything that needs further investigation, they’ll refer you to the nearest eye clinic

A floater suddenly appearing after eye trauma is one of the warning signs of a detached retina so yes I would get it checked out ASAP. I second the suggest above about the opticians, I have had a few eye problems in the past and they have always said to come to see them first. As said, they will have more kit than a GP. The only thing a GP or A&E have been able to do for me in the past is say “well it might be that” and then refer me to the specialist eye clinic at the big hospital (so just a waste of time really).

As above. Could be a small spec of blood in the fluid in your eye but needs looking at. Don’t bother with GP as they don’t have the equipment or expertise. Your local emergency dept may have an eye casualty (could ring first to find out, may not be available 24hrs) a visit to opticians if not

Dont wish to worry you, but if its getting worse its almost cetainly not a floater, do you know which is your nearest hospital with an emergency eye clinic, it would be best to give them a call tbh

Best bet would be to get to the opticians asap to get it checked over, might be nothing but you are better finding out.

A&E is definitely worth a trip now and optician will only be able to look and refer you to the hospital beat to co straight to A&E

Ok, after the advice on here and a call to the NHS I decided to go to a&e, just got back, they checked it out and said it’s all ok. Thanks everyone.

Scratched my cornea playing rugby. Had a floater ever since.

I’ve got hundreds of the buggers in my left eye and quite a few in my right.

Most annoying. Nothing you can do about them though :/

Glad to hear that it’s ok.

Yep. I have loads of floaters. more common in short sighted people I believe. The optician comments on them at every checkup but he always compares to the last checkup and says they’re not getting worse.

For me the hardest time is when I go skiing. When its foggy, all I can see is floaters, I’m virtually blind. I just have to follow someone else.

samuri, when it’s foggy everyone’s blind – at least we’ve got floaters to follow 🙂
