I have a five and a Bianchi Road bike.

The five was new of which i have reciepts however there have been many upgrades over the last two years - so much so theres hardly anything original.

My roadbike was bought bit by bit - frame from here and groupset from here, mix of paypal and cash and online shops.

Now im just wondering if i should get them valued - like you would jewelry for example. If either/both were stolen i could provide an accurate cost but I wouldnt have all the proof.

Do any bike shops do a kind of valuation on cost to replace based on spec of what you have - that you could file away in case you need it.

What does everyone do here?

Just photographs of bikes. Never had to use them but if my bikes were nicked I reckon I could identify most of the upgraded parts or rattle off a list of components for a custom build.

If push came to shove, i've not deleted an e-mail in years so probbaly have invoices for 90% of the components in there.

my mate was knocked off by a car and has been instructed to get two independant bike shop valuations

wondering what the lbs will charge for that.... and how much arguing will ensue

My LBS only sells BMXs & 'normal' bikes, so when I had to get a post-RTA evaluation I went to the nearest swanky shop (Spesh only) and they kindly wrote an essay on frame mis-alignment & carbon fallibility, a part by part replacement list and a full bike equivalent price; all free of charge.

Nice people. They may get some business out of me for their efforts sometime.

P.S. If they do charge won't the cost be claimable as part of the settlement?

Should never have been sucked into the preston thread I tend to avoid any thread that mentions police, but having had bikes stolen and knowing others whohave been through the same experience, I've known LBS write valuations based on photos, description etc for free on the hope they get the replacement business.

Its not something you need to do prior to the unfortunate event as long as you have some record of the bike (photos, receipts for odd bits or even services etc are all useful) and your insurance doesn't stipulate it (M+S insure to something like £4K without even specifying the bike let alone providing a valuation).

If you havent already, register them on http://www.immobilise.com. Police crime recording is force-wide, if your bike gets nicked and someone is stopped whilst riding it in another force area (cue other thread) which might only be a matter of a few miles away, the finding officer will have no record of it being nicked. The database is a spin-off of the national mobile phone register which was set up by the phone industry at the behest of government to cut down on phone robberies, and most forces check immobilise as well as their own database when they recover suspected (there we go again) stolen property. All my bikes, phones, cameras, TV etc are logged there.
