Skirting, door frames, picture rails think with 90 years of gloss. Lots of detail is like to restore

In the past I’ve simply hand sanded lightly to key and overpainted.

What is the best way/tools for the job?

I had a big job on at one of our old houses – every door, skirting and dado etc was 70years deep in gloss paint.
I bought new dado and picture rail, every (hoofin’ big) skirting and door to the acid strippers. I was only then left with the door frames to do by hand in-situ.

blow torch or heat gun if you don’t mind fumes and collateral damage , what detail do you want to save ? I would say getting new would be easier and less toxic.

1930s-50s were bad for lead pigments. Be very careful with young children around

in the UK we were still putting lead in paint until the 1980s. A lot of the legislation to ban lead in paint here focused paints for toys rather than decorating materials and when we did start banning it the ban focused on consumer brands – paints available through trade outlets could still have lead in.
