Anyone have a subscription to something like the Spectator, New Statesman or The Economist etc? Looking to get a swift birthday present for a family member and wondering if there’s an obvious quality choice? Person in mind is quite centrist in politics, so a mix of viewpoints is good.
They are, however, not that interested in big picture geo-politics – more domestic stuff. Whenever I’ve picked up the Economist it seems quite global in outlook?

Any other prominent titles to consider?

    + 1 more.

It can take a while to get into the style of PI*, but it is worth it – in some cases you get the news a couple of years ahead of most of the population.

we take the Spectator, The Economist, Prospect and Private Eye.

Speccie: Bit irreverent at times, obviously right wing, but Fraser Nelson isnt an idiot. Rod Liddle can troll for England. Back half is a bit too culture (art & literature) but the front half is worth the time of a couple of coffees on Saturday morning. Android App is good, onine site is not quite as good. Coffeeshop blog sometimes tripe, sometimes OK.

Economist: Best value for money. Best written. Wall to wall info and facts with only the odd sly comments as to political points. Def global, but the UK section is a good read in its own right. Bagehot always on the money. Hard work to get through in a week, Id prefer it was fortnightly. Google web app and android apps both excellent. In fact prob best publication apps Ive used ever.

Prospect: Mrs S still reads it. I gave up on it a few years ago when it changed editors and became to woolly, Used to have good essays in it.

Private Eye: Old skool. Still breaks some good stories, but is fighting with the likes of Guido Fawkes for political gossip. Letters page still fun as are HP sauce and Street of Shame. The middle section gets very samey and there’s nothing as well written as the likes of Dear Bill etc from olden days.

Private Eye sub always makes a good present.

As something a little different maybe Society Now can be subscribed to for free. Its quite good at de-politicing news and turning it back into facts again (a bit like listening to More or Less on radio 4). Its not the overt purpose of the magazine, but it reveal a lot of the game play in politics by making it absent.

Their annual ”Britain In (insert year)” magazines are good too.

In a similar flavour, and a book rather than a magazine, but ‘The Tiger that Isn’t’ by the people behind More or Less is good too
