Best commuter hybrid for under £500?

Hi all,

I'm now looking for a dedicated commuter. Limit of £500, probably on the CTW scheme. I honestly can't see past the Boardman Hybrid Comp for £499. I want flat bars, and gears. I'd be pushed to take something with Nexus/Alfine, but can't seem to find anything at that price.

Anybody got other ideas? Thanks.

Can you get a Carrera Subway with Nexus for that money?
The Boardman would probably be my choice but hub gears on a commuting bike certainly appeals.
