  • Bacon buttie dilemma. To eat of not to eat?

Started a new contract and the place I am at has a canteen downstairs. So off I trot to grab myself a bacon buttie as a Friday treat. The lady on the till was very welcoming and friendly and I was really cheery given the forthcoming treat 🙂

But my elation was short lived as I watched said welcoming lady move from till to food prep area to prepare my Friday treat without any washing of hands, food prep gloves … midway through, her colleague asks her a question and she wanders off to do some calculation on the calculator and write something down before return to finish prepare my sarnie.

Watching all this going on was too much for me and I gave a cheery smile handed over the £1.55 and then proceeded to sling it in the bin when out of sight. Made a mental note that canteen is grubby and must be avoided at all costs.

Would you have tucked into the sarnie?

PS – I have come to the conclusion that open kitchens are a bad idea as you see all this going on 🙁

Sackable offence to throw bacon away where I work, only thing worse is having green on your plate!

Not too late to get the butty out of the bin provided it was wrapped up, go on, hurry.

Haha. It’s a unanimous verdict then. I seem to have adopted my wife’s OCD tendencies.

Yes, how do you prepare food at home?

    We don’t have a till.

Did somebody pee on the till?

Honestly….I would have probably done the same.

I am aware I am being a wuss, but I have a ‘thing’ about food prep.

    Not a sexy thing, either….

I also do not have a till at home.

If she looks like this, you can bin the butty. But even that’s marginal.

too much cleanliness is not a good thing.

    I would have scoffed it.

I’m more unsettled by the fact you paid for it, then threw it away.

Why not just not pay for it and walk away at the till?

You are £1.55 down and hungry. 😐

Sat in a pub eating lunch I had a front row seat as a member of the kitchen staff left the loos closely followed by a customer declaring loudly to the bar staff ‘he’s just been in the loos and didn’t wash his hands!’. Caused a bit of fuss but I think everyone carried on eating whilst enjoying the spectacle.

    Was the BACON SMOKED ?

Smoking kills all or was it the fag ash that put you off ?

£1.55 is good value for a urine/fecally infected bacon sandwich. I’m guessing not daaan saaaf?

    No Pudding for you.

I work in the food industry and yes she should have washed her hands esp if handling cash as money is a “high risk” of cross infection for virus’ etc. However you do need to eat some unfriendly bacteria from time to time to keep your immune system ticking over (IANAD) so have a look at the general standards of hygiene and not a single isolated incident. She may well have washed her hand just before you saw her, equally she may have been picking her nose.

Edit – RubberBuccanner – this is more common than you think, the Chefs would prefer to use the facilities in the kitchen as they will be (or should be) a lot cleaner than those in the loos. That said my kitchen team have all been instructed to do it twice anyway.

I had the most disappointing bacon buttie of my entire life this morning. I didn’t even know it was *possible* for bacon to be disappointing…

I’ll be the 1st to admit that the quality of mine wasn’t top notch, but it’s to be expected when salvaging it from a bin at work.

    MICROWAVED!!!!!

So here’s the thing. You are out in the hills. You need a wee. It’s windy but you need it now. Wee gets everywhere. Half an hour later it’s lunchtime. Eat the sandwiches with unwashed, wee infected hands or not?

Eat for sure, in all cases above

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. A little bit of dirt at regular intervals tops up the protection circuit
