So if one mature Ash tree absorbs 24 Kg of co2 a season and produces enough oxygen for 2 people for a year, what happens when you fell 80 million of them ?

Depends what you do with the wood surely?

    Plant some other species?

Probably the same as when tens of millions of Elm died off. Just go out and plant lots of new trees.

I thought they were considering stopping the felling, on the basis they’re probably chopping down the 5-10% that are resistant as well as those that aren’t?

Ash grows like a weed in the hedgerows around here, it’s as pervasive as Elder. I’m sure if left to it’s own devices it’ll be fine.

With 7 billion people in the world, all using more than just the oxygen they use for breathing, 80 million trees is going to make fek all difference.

So how many trees would we have to lose to make a difference then ?

NASA reckon there are around 400 Billion trees on the planet. What’s 80 Million as a percentage of that? And as has been said – felling these just means other stuff will grow.

Another stupid question occurs – if you fell a load of ash trees, won’t they just sprout from the stumps?

Most of the planet if covered by water and phytoplankton. The importance of trees is overstated. They’re nice to look at though
