Wondering about taking my kids to see Avatar tomorrow. Is there any point in going to the 3D version? I have this mental image that 3D movies are crap - what d'ya think?

I had that image too until I seen Avatar at an imax in 3D, simply amazing draws you right into the world.

Up was excellent in 3D for the early part of the film but I found that eventually I didn't notice it. Having said that I intend to see Avatar in 3D.

Also if you have an I max cinema is to see
A Christmas Carol too.I did re buy Polar Express DVD in 3D and blu ray

Just got back from Avatar 3D - the visual spectacle is truly awesome.
Story has very strong overtones of the treatment of native tribes in the US and Oz when minerals and resources of value were discovered, but the ending was a bit too Disney.
Would have been much better with a much darker Ridley Scott type ending.

Its in preparation for new tech, the next big thing after HD. Right now youll still need to wear the silly specs but in the next few years the cinemas and TVs will have it built right in. The movie makers are getting in on the act by producing it in 3D after all you cant go back again and film a movie again in 3D but if you make it at the same time then when the TV tech catches up they can sell the media all over again.

Was it only me that had issues with the 3D in Avatar then? I liked the movie itself - visually stunning and as exciting and engaging as you want from a big, slightly dumb blockbuster. But I think I would have enjoyed it more in 2D. The 3D was by turns impressive and then gimmicky and at times, just plain distracting.
During the best bits of the film, I didn't even really notice the 3D, which makes me wonder if I would have missed it if it wasn't there. Then something would 'bounce out' of the screen at you and jolt you out of your involvement in the movie for a moment, by reminding you that you're watching some clever special effects.
But it was during the more narrative (and less visual) sequences, that it most felt like a distraction. In places the 3D effect, coupled with 2D filming techniques, just jarred. The temptation was always there to try and focus on bits of the screen that were shot out of focus, due to filmed depth of field. In 2D, your eye would naturally be drawn to the focal point of the screen, in 3D it just felt a bit wrong. Sometimes it did look amazing, but there were moments where you felt you were looking at a load of unevenly spaced cardboard cut outs too.
Throw in the annoying, bulky glasses frames in your peripheral vision, and the slightly murky look of parts of the movie due to the reduced light transmission of the glasses (both of which may have been problems local to the particular screening I was in), and the process has a way to go before it wins me over. I'd rather just see good movies, and I'm not convinced 3D is going to focus the studios' minds on good scripts and production values in the next few years.

The 3D is effective although it is not without problems. But I'd still go see Avatar in 3D. You can see it in 2D when the DVD/blu-ray is released.

I thought 3-D Christmas Carol was absolutely breath-taking.

I saw Avatar yesterday, thought the 3D thing was ok, not amazing, but did add 'something'. It's not as amazing as the first time I saw colour TV, more like the first time I noticed a stereo effect on telly. The story wasn't anything special, just a load of pro tree hugging, anti american imperialism stuff.
That said, there was a lot of 3d alien nip on display...

Greatcall to go for the 3D version. It's the first 3D movie I've seen, and it really enhanced what was already a quite mind boggling visual spectacle for me.

What you have to realise is that 3D in cinemas doesn't use those crappy cardboard glasses with red and green or blue and green lenses, it uses plastic framed glasses with grey lenses like a cheap pair of Rayban wayfairer knock-offs. You barely notice them after a few minutes, and the 3D is astonishing. I've now seen three or four 3D films, and if there's the option, then it's 3D every time. The glasses are free, so what exactly do you have to lose? Nobody's going to laugh at you, so go see it in the format it was designed to be seen in, they spent twelve years developing the technology so that human expressions could be motion-captured to render properly as CGI characters in 3D, so it seems daft not to take advantage when it's available.

I watched Up! in 3D and that was brilliant, well worth watching...
But have also watched Avatar in IMAX 3D and that was breathtaking! Really amazing and would recommend it to anyone.
IMAX glasses are much more comfortable than the standard 3D issues we had. Worth going to an IMAX just for that.
