This weekend both the oven and washing machine have gone wrong- oven I suspect heating element since it works on every setting except fan heating where the fan works but the oven doesn't heat up- washing machine does absolutely nothing.

I know nothing about appliance repair guys- do I need a specialist repairman for each appliance, or can I save a fortune on call out charges etc and get one bloke to do it all?

yeah, the power light is still glowing, but the display and door lock release are dead.

You can replace the element should be really easy, my new elemnt was £25 and was connected with spade connectors.

Washing machine filter pump maybe blocked with nail, screw, hairgrip, etc Remove slim cover at the bottom on front, drain water out with hose that should be there, with towels on floor unscrew big round filter cover and pull out look inside for anything that might be blocking it. Put back together. Wash.
