Former downhill mtb racers Tommy Wilkinson and Paul Smail are looking to ride in their first Tour o’ the Borders, but they can’t do it without a bit of help from you guys finding a tandem – and it’s for a good cause – this will mark a return to the saddle for Tommy, who when training for the 2013 season, crashed badly 18 months ago and suffered a spinal cord contusion, a bleed on the brain and devastatingly ripped all 5 nerves that supply movement and sensation to his right arm from his spinal column. His right arm is now paralysed and he has altered sensation on his left hand side. He’s hoping to get back cycling on his own in due course, but this event would mark a massive milestone in his return to riding. Together with Paul, he is hoping to complete the full route on a tandem in aid of Wings for Life Spinal Research. As it stands, finding a suitable tandem has proved harder than expected, and with only a few weeks to go, the guys are asking for anyone who can help out this good cause with the loan (or rent if needs be) of a functioning road tandem to please get in touch.
