I cannot recommend removing the bearings to "check" them, as it's likely to damage them. Do the checking by testing for play a) at the wheel rim for the main bearings and b) at the cassette for the freehub. If there's more than a small amount of movement, replace them quickly. If you chance it by trying to get a bit of extra life, you risk the bearings breaking up which makes it far harder to remove the remains

not sure if you could knock axle through from the other side and then it'll be easier to work on out of the hub?

Just bought some wheels you see and the rear hub needs a service. I think I might as well change the freehub and axle bearings all in one go! The seller said they needed doing so I'm just waiting for the bloody postman to deliver them. One week and counting from posted!

it's inside and cannot be accessed till the outer bearing is removed. It only retains the bearing inside the freehub body
Drift the axle out of the hub from the non drive side, complete with freehub, then support the freehub and whack the axle out

sfb - hence my edit and subsequent suggestion to drift it out from the non-drive side

Thanks guys I'll try the non drive-side approach...it'll be easier to heat if I need to then
