How about everyone picks them up, puts them in an envelope and sends them to the freepost address of GlacksoSmitKl*ne? (damn you google for being so efficient!)

The amount of litter in the south wales valleys is astonishing….if only there was a bunch of people living there with nothing to do all day who could go out and pick it up in exchange for some sort of handout from the state.

How much should they be paid for this task?

Well they must hold some sort of responsibility for selling sugary water at inflated prices.

Another one is ‘monster energy’, must be a lot people off their ding dong on all this c*ap. I found a load in clipstone near the wooden ramp, so i put it in a plastic bag-must be all the ‘sessioning’ that goes on there 😉

It’s not biodegradable so in my view it IS their fault. If they’re charged £1 for every bottle returned to them I’m sure they’ll take a far more enlightened attitude towards recycling and product packaging.

In fact, apply this to anything – so if I find a discarded McDonalds cup by the side of the road, I can take it back and they have to give me 50p. It is perfectly acceptable for prices to increase by 50p to make this work since you get your money back if you’re not chronically lazy.

It’s Costa cups around here… they’ve taken over McD’s for filling the gutters of Oxfordshire.

All the litter and energy drink containers that you see out and about really annoys me, i used to think it was always young scrotes that didnt know any better but thats just not true. The amount of litter i come across at major client sites, in meeting rooms as well as outside just really disturbs me.

I dont understand the mentality of why people do it, it just dont get it, seriously.. Anyone care to admit they drop litter all the time so we can all understand and do something about it..?

    Lazy energy drinkers.

Facebook group my boss set up to document the phenomenom. He is intrigued by the fact that the drinks are supposed to give you more energy yet the drinkers seem to lack that required to dispose of the cans/bottles. It annoys the flip out of me too.

Just imagine if youre some burrowing animal, and you pop oiut for a crap or sex, even a snack and come back and somebodies shoved a lucozade bottle down your hole.

Same thing if your at home and cant get out.

Me and the wife pick the litter in the roadsides near to our house.
The amount we collect is astonishing. We have that much that we can’t carry it back so ask people living nearby if we can stick it in their bin.
A McDonalds with a drive thru has opened in the last 12 months and a big proportion is from there(about 5 mile away).
Really its everything thrown from vehicles, even the local bus drivers clean the buses out and throw it on the tarmac.
A guy from the local council told me its now taking up to 4 times to clean certain roads due to the big takeaway companies opening up on retail parks.

Its not the takeaway companies fault, its the inconsiderate twunts that can’t be bothered to hold on to it for a few minutes fault.

Strangely the 2 seem to go hand in hand more often than not.

I came to a conclusion on a bike tour – you no longer get roadside porn, just fag boxes, takeaway wrappers and red bull cans. Therefore anyone that smokes and / or eats takeaways and / or drinks red bull is a ****.

Wouldn’t a responsible takeaway company, after being furnished with the information that their packaging is littering the countryside, do something about it?
Does all this ranting apply to organic litter too?

    T’is funny this thread..

In Harrogate it’s Snickers Bars that litter the footpath that goes through the Farm, In Hants it’s more often than not shiny kitkat wrappers and McD coffee cups, In the Downs it’s Nutrition Bar wrappers and cans, In That London it can be anything from condoms to McD’s/Costa Cups/Fast Food boxes or ticket stubs but more annoyingly it’s fag ends.

In that London today, it’s the massed detritus of a charity walk along the river. Some event overnight has left more litter than I’ve seen in ages.

I came to this conclusion a loong time ago. Not so much ‘anybody’ but a proportion of Mcd’s clientele must be ignorant ****wits that don’t give a **** about the state of the countryside.
I do a bit of sea fishing & the amount of shite left on the end of some piers is astonishing, empty beer cans get my goat, people carry them when theyr’e full (therefore heavier) but can’t be arsed to squash em down & carry them out! Winkers!

There was a pile of about 30 discarded bottles near the top of one of the DH runs at fod today, is it really that hard to ride with a bag?

The other thing that really pishes me off are the red royal mail elastic bands which are dropped everywhere, I’ve started picking them up and dumping them in post boxes but it doesn’t seem to be getting through!

JEngledow, two of my own pet hates there! The litter at the FOD is a disgrace.

once tried to shame my 15yr old sons football team into cleaning up after them selves after a match bottles and cans all over, rounded up 1 1/2 carrier bags of rubbish did this couple of times made no difference some people are just born with nothing between their ears and dont care, worse bit is the pitch is in their home town and have to walk past a bin to get home..

As much as I hate the lazy ****wits who drop the litter, how many people who hate seeing litter pick up other peoples and take it to a bin?

We can all do our bit to help – if everyone picked up a piece of litter every ride/walk/day there would be a lot less around.

What’s most disturbing is how they frigged around with the flavour a decade ago, making it sweeter with no more dry after taste. Unforgivable.

Annoys the crap out of me. I organise litter picking sessions on the local cycle paths – the amount collected amazes me every time, how much better it looks afterwards pleases me immensely every time, how quick it returns boils my piss every time.

    Interesting replies!
Round our way I think it’s the posties throwing the bottles out of the van on their round. It’s rural so they have transits so they can get them about 6ft into the fields!
The WORST littering I ever saw was a bus driver throwing the remains of a takeaway banquet out of his cab window. BUT the story gets worse. He threw it out while travelling on the roundabout where the A46 crosses the M6 – it went on the bl**dy motorway!

Postal workers get through two million red rubber bands per day, the Royal Mail has revealed.

In the past five years, the organisation has spent almost £5m on four billion bands which are used to bundle letters together.

Keep Britain Tidy has called for their use to be reduced because they say wild animals can choke on them.

The Royal Mail says the bands are necessary and that they use biodegradable ones.

The figures were released to the Daily Telegraph under the Freedom of Information Act.

It said that the amount the postal organisation spends on bands has increased by 40% in five years.

Keep Britain Tidy has long campaigned against the use of rubber bands.

In 2009, about 13,000 discarded bands were collected by people and sent in to the charity who then delivered them to the Royal Mail’s headquarters.

Dickie Felton, from Keep Britain Tidy, has previously said: “We accept that dropping an elastic band is hardly the worst littering offence in the world, but none-the-less it is litter.

“The bands look terrible strewn on the floor and pose a choking danger to pets and wildlife.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “Royal Mail regularly reminds postmen and women about the importance of avoiding litter.

“The vast majority of rubber bands are re-used by our people in delivery offices and mail centres across the UK.”

Having seen the destruction a crate of leaking Monster Cans does to the concrete pad it has been sitting on for a month, I would never entertain drinking the stuff.

Most of the main through roads round here have hedges and gutters strewn with plastic waste that can only have been thrown from passing traffic.

It’s interesting that there is a sliding scale involved with rubbish in cars, from those who admit they won’t bag their own rubbish and carry it till they reach a bin because it’ll “smell their car out” to those whose cars you have to fight for a clear space to put your feet down in.

But it truly saddens me when riding down country lanes to find focused areas where I find junk food wrapping dropped on the road and tossed in the hedges and beyond.

I’ve had abuse and threatened with being punched after confronting litter louts throwing stuff out of their car windows.

A ‘Costa coffee’ opened recently in our village and there are now loads of discarded paper cups thrown into high grass verges along quiet country lanes about 6 miles away. I keep meaning to bag them up and take them into the coffee shop, dumping them near the counter, mostly I’m on my bike so this isn’t possible to carry them.

To add to earlier, this is the only thing I want to see sticking out of a hedge in the country.
