My wife hired one for a week and absolutely loved driving it.

She had some runs to do to the tip and the council guy was amazed at the amount she got in what looks like a tiny car. After this she had a new Ford Fiesta for a week which she thought was ok but preferred the IQ even though its a smaller car.

I have nothing useful to add other than if I owned one I'd tell people it's really an Aston Martin (cygnet) then walk off before they could tell me otherwise, and for that reason I'm in.

I've had a Citroen C2 as a courtesy car on several occasions. It is a hateful shit-box.

May look nice but under the hood they are the cheapest of cheap materials. The same engine/box and chasis on several cars as mentioned, done several clutches on them. The most recent was a 57 plate with 13K on the clock, the clutch pressure plate broke in two. Exhausts on them are terrible too, last a few years before the support brackets rust off.

They don't have any arch liners either so will become rust buckets with british weather.

I drove an Aygo, it was pretty flippin crude. iQ looks a lot nicer in terms of interior though. Don't think it's the same car, is it?

What about the new VW Up?

some one i know had one brand new and it spent more time at the garage in the first year than they had it so they chopped it in at a year old to get rid of it.

Aygo/C1/107 all the same car and made in Czech republic, iQ can be had with the 1.0 petrol engine from the other three and a 1.3.

Dunno why someone mentioned the C2 as it has nothing in common with the iQ and little with the C1.

I have heard of the clutch issues with 1.0 litre engines in Aygos but I had mine since new and put 45k, not particularly gently on it and the clutch is fine.

While I have had to replace the back box because of a rusty hangar it's £35 for a new back box on eBay, £70 for the cat back.

Harry is correct.
By far the worst car I have ever been in. (Hyundai owner who used to have a Proton speaking, so not a badge snob.)
Very noisy, no umph, would get very unstable overtaking lorries at any sort of speed, the auto one is very jerky, surprisingly thirsty on a long run, most uncomfortable seats ever, GF's broke twice in the first six months of having it, it has no rev counter (probably not that unusual) but also no temperature gauge or oil pressure guage (quite important I think, especially temp!) and you could see where they had cut corners on it, light not coming on when the door was opened for example, no lid on the glovebox, little things that made it seem cheap and tacky, not cheap and cheerful (I'm also an ex Landy Defender driver so I love basic if it's done right). And to top it all off it was the same price as a three year old Golf! No contest there. I shall stop now.
.
So the IQ. IMO same as useless as a Smart car. Why would anybody buy a car that is totally unsuitable for long journeys or carrying anything? The only journeys where a car like this would be better than a Focus/Golf/147/pretty much anything else a couple of years older which could be had for the same price are journies where a bike would be even better, ie short comutting trips.
MTFU, get a proper car and use your bike for what you were going to use this for.
.
Rant over.

Why would anybody buy a car that is totally unsuitable for long journeys or carrying anything?

Because those are not journeys they ever undertaken because their lifestyle is somewhat different to yours?

People have different needs, hence the variety of cars on the market.

I looked at and drove the iQ and the Smart CDi, I went for the Smart in the end because i. the iQ is so damned ugly. ii. the fuel economy is better in the Smart.
The iQ was probably the better car to drive but the Smart does what I need it to do and its averaged 67 and a bit mpg over the past 27000 miles, in fact I've just ordered another Smart.
As for carrying things I carried a Genesis Day One (size XL) in my Smart last week.

This is a website for people who ride bikes, rather than one aimed at people who need those glorified mobility scooters 😉 For those kinds of journeys a bike will always be a better option.

For lots of people small, economical cars designed to carry a couple of people and a bit of shopping are perfect. If that's the sort of thing you need, then the IQ is a neat, comfortable, well equipped and economical option. It's not all that cheap though. Neither does it have much in common wit an Aygo, other than the engine.

I reckon a Panda is a better option personally, as you can carry four people and fit a bit more in it for not much more length, but if tiny is what you want, I'd say it's better than the Smart (although that's only based on my experience with our older one).
