    How about a safety/rescue knife?
    Neoprene gloves?
    Helmet?

I don’t think you’ll get a training course for that, but that would be my recommendation for somebody “going to buy a kayak”

    Decent dry bag.

    Rescue rope

Trolley if it’s a heavy sit on top.

neoprene boots (sizing could be difficult).

Most kayakers I know don’t use gloves but a set of Pogies (hand warmer type things) for winter might be more use.

    Rich.

Go for slightly more, and buy him the Foundation Safety and Rescue course:
    https://www.britishcanoeing.org.uk/courses/foundation-safety-and-rescue-training/

We paid £60 here last year (it’s £65 now):

He’ll thank you immensely for that, as it is a great course that helps any level of paddler.

Yeah, rescue knife, throwbag (if whitewater), skull cap for warmth, river guide books, drybags.

Lomo water sports is good for ideas.

Thermal – Reed Transpire, Nookie, Palm Equipment, Immersion Research all do nice ones.
If he’s doing whitewater then throwline, rescue knife, drybags
If he’s going to do it in winter then pogies
If he’s on the sea then a paddle leash
If he’s floating around a lake in summer then a Tilley hat.w
Gift voucher to the local canoe/kayak shop or instructor centre

    Any number of guidebooks (Pesdapress)

    Training.

Way more effective than any kit, and means he would buy the right kit as well.

Failing that one of those poncho changing towels and couple of Ikea bags – one to stand in and one to put kit in.

    Fox Whistle

Pair of nose clips if intend learning to roll.

    Dry bag

Could get all of above for less than £40.
