Happy New Year to you all, can you help with this? I have an interview for a job as a trainee at an airport firestation. What's the interview likely to be like. suit up or more casual? Questions, tests etc etc. Its early feb but I really want the job so thought I would try to get my head together sooner rather than later.

Also, the medical and fitness tests, what's this like too…

    Thanks….

Thanks Drac, sure someone will be along in a while, really want the job. Sounds pretty interesting and picks up where my mountain rescue stuff left off.. Also good timing as made redundant on 28th Dec….

It's a cracking job my mate is one he loves it. Love taken the piss out of him though as compared to us they are very very quiet. Our rural Ambulance station does more jobs per annum than the whole of Northumberland Fire Rescue even with there odd way of counting 3 appliances attending as 3 calls.

im a fireman but the questions were all based around community fire saftey and you wont be doing that. tests wise we did enclosed spaces , height tests, strength tests and bleep test . it should all be on the website of what ever body runs the service . if i can be of any help let me know but its a different set up mate. good luck

It's worth finding out if you can have a pre-interview visit/tour, it shows enthusiasm and should give you the chance to ask some background questions.

**** me the airport lads n lasses do less than us 🙄

Cant really comment on interview for the Airport as I work/attend the council Fire and Rescue Service.

There is some info if you google it about Airport Fire Service.

@mick- you need to drag yourself into the modern fire service, you are a firefighter, not a fireman.

Wont it be difficult to arrange a visit as its on the airport apron beyond security.. ? I have an interview at the airport then possibly a medical and the tests. Then on to the Fire Fighting School in Gullane for 6 weeks…

Know them both, is this a good ploy in the interview…. Bruneep, where are you based?

Can't see there being a problem with a visit as long as it's not Heathrow or something. Make sure you bring ID and a high vis vest, though.

Most security goons at airports are unpleasant but I assume you'd be escorted by a member of the fire service anyway?

Hi try http://www.fireservice.co.uk theres a good section on recruitment and a good few airport firemen on there who might be able to help. I too am a local authourity fireman and our recruitment interviews have naff all to do with your ability to do the operational stuff! but i imagine your interview may well touch on team work etc
Feel free to PM me if i can help

got 3 weeks of gullane next month, luckily sat cosy inside for my final fire safety module. Shall be having a pint or two at the golf view.

To answer the original question you will need to prove your alround abilities from being able to read, write, count and common sense physics type questions. Also prove your fitness with bleep test and other physical/practical tests which will also spot if you are a team player.
The modern fire service is also interested to see how you deal with people and the problems they can cause, and diversity issues like sexism or racial, homophobia for instance.
Best of luck, from my experience the first 20 years are the worst lol.

    Another one here.

You need to be looking at your Personal Qualities and Attributes. It's what the majority of Fire Services look at, loads of information on fireservice.co.uk although you may need to subscribe.

Not sure what the Physical tests consist of these days as its been 14 years since I completed mine.

Good Luck! It's the best job in the world.

Drac-We're so quiet it's unbelievable, Lucky if we are getting one shout over a set of 4 shifts! and we don't count 3 appliances attending as 3 jobs. Billy been giving you duff info?
