I lost a root canal filling a while ago, and never got round to doing anything about it (in typical style) and the other day the whole tooth broke off at the gum. So there’s a root in there but nothing else.

What options are there, if any? I’ve no idea about teeth.

If the root is sound they may be able to put in a post and give you a crown. If not sound, pull it out and fit a bone implant then later, a screwed-in crown or whatever it’s called. Better sell a couple of bikes to get the money together.

molgrips – you need to be careful of infection, definitely worth getting it seen to pronto.

If enough tooth left above gum level then may be able to crown.
Might be a problem with the root filling being exposed to saliva and risk of infection.
    Or extract and either

This is a molgrips thread. That probably now means he’ll get grumpy at the advise and insist on doing something completely contrary 🙂

Followed by new threads at daily intervals asking for comments on his contrary idea(s) until ultimately a thread will appear titled ‘what dentist for severe dental abscess’.

    😉

I’m shit at sorting my teeth out. Just seems to get put to the back of my mind somehow, and I pay the price.

Anyway I went to the hospital to see if I can get the students to sort it out. Although it might be in the new year now she said.. ho hum. Trying to decide if it’d be any quicker going to a normal dentist.. certianly won’t be cheaper 🙁 I might be able to afford £400 whatever for a crown but the rest sounds expensive… just after I spunked all my spare cash on building a new bike 🙁

OP, I had something similar when half tooth broke off. Dentist said only option was to remove the other half and have an implant. I waited about 10 years to have that done, probably not advisable but its all worked out OK in the end. Expensive business (from memory crown £500-ish and implant £1500 ? these where Singapore prices, great quality work and cheaper than UK)

Don’t forget you don’t have to replace it, or even have it out if it’s not infected and covered over/protected. Needs looking at though to ascertain this.
    IAAD btw 🙂

    Useless without pics, etc.

I was going to ask if there was a University Hospital by you but looks like they are busy. 🙁

    Are you NHS or private?

Looking for a nice set of 26″ wheels if you need to raise some cash quick! 😉

£400 for a crown? is it front teeth? if it’s a back tooth just get a metal one, think they are around £70/80 on the NHS.

It’s the second premolar. Can’t really see it unless I get my picture taken at a bike race doing my best gurning.

I do have a spare set of Hope ProII on Mavic 317.. very light.. hmm..

Yeah it’s actually better than it was before it broke off! No pain or anything. There’s now a little bit of root showing above the gum on the front. I’m not sure the forum wants pictures of it..!

    A crown is band 3 – £218 NHS

So this NHS thing – there are only three amounts you pay.. that’s per visit? So 3 visits = 3x£218?

I had a scare with my 2nd pre-molar last week. Turned out to be referred pain from a sinus infection dentist (nhs) were excellent in getting me in quick. I celebrated maintaining my perfect dental record (at nearly 35) with eating a lot of chocolate at the weekend 😀

I can’t imagine what proper tooth ache must feel like, not looking forward to the day I find out.

317 – same with my as my 717s 🙁 Need more girth.

Look up the NHS dental pricing bands. It will say what is included in each band. Not sure if it is per visit or per procedure. I suspect the former.

    options:

    1. get the root extracted. leave
    2. get the root extract, fit implant
    3. get the root extracted, single tooth denture (maybe fixed, maybe removable, discuss with dentist)

All of the above will cost:

    1. NHS Band 3 (£218) regardless of how many visits, and includes cost of denture (unlikely to get implant on NHS, unless front tooth, then maybe, looooooong wait)
    2. Private, look at maybe £80-120 for root extraction, then £200-350 for denture, and from about £1800 upwards for implant and crown

Get thee to a dentist BEFORE it becomes infected. (it will get infected by the way)…enjoy.

I’d take a drive north if I were you then! 😆

    Single crown

£70.08 (I’m obviously assuming the root is fine to take another crown.)

I got quoted about 180 quid for a bridge the other week.

It’s per course of treatment, not visit.

I’d rather go without than have a denture I reckon. Don’t fancy that.

it’s a personal thing, is this 5th upper or lower? How wide is your smile? denture tech as come on a bit, but it will need bridging to the teeth next, implant carries risk (not much, clearly, but it’s still elective surgery)

    Discuss with dentist, not STW

I agree with that. hence the quote for the bridge above, still not sure whether to bother tbh, as it involves drilling down 2 good teeth to fill the gap.

Over time the teeth behind will push into the gap, that can cause more trouble later FYI. I hate the dentist with a passion but I was glad the implant done and glad it was in Singapore (cost, specialists etc)

teeth might close up a bit in a child, but not so much for ‘grips TBH.

If you’re going to leave it ( just extract roots) Mols, then it’ll be band 2 btw, not band 3 and will be £50.00, might even do it there and then for you.

Perhaps I’ll try and register with an NHS dentist then and give the students a miss.

    I’d have a crown if I can.

Sorry, just had to do a crown prep 😉

NHS – you have an examination first and all work that needs to be done will be in one course of treatment. If a crown is possible then that’ll make it band 3 (as will a denture/bridge).

Scottish NHS is indeed different! A bit like it was in the rest of the UK pre 2006. Note there is a maximum charge which is a fair bit more than Band 3.

If extracted the gap will close a bit (even in an adult although it takes longer) This may or may not cause interferences with other teeth.

Quite a good place for an implant, strategically, ie things can be built onto it in future if needed.

    HTH.

    Still needs some pics 😉

this Mythical NHS dental treatment…….HOW? In my area there are no practices taking NHS work, it’s all private and costs mega bucks for anything! I’ve been told by my dentist that i need to go and see a “specialist” to asses my teeth for potential periodontise (sp) £200 just for an assesment – treatment (i,e deep clean) in excess of £600…

Oh, got told off by my dentist for using fancy toothbrush heads – apparantly they are shit and they’ve seen an increase in issues with people who use them – stick with the simple round head jobs!!

what is it with upper pre-molars? (the one behind the canine) – i had my left pulled about 6 years ago, and now my right is on it’s last legs. All my other teeth are fine…

Yes, hadn’t been in about 4 years though.

Although, the big sign on the door saying NHS patients welcome would probably mean that it’s not that much of an issue! 🙂

Have to say that for a few years I didn’t go to the dentist because I believed that there were no NHS places available since that what I’d read/heard everywhere. Got told otherwise and found out it’s true – got booked in at the local NHS practice and had an appt within a week, for £18 IIRC.
