Whilst riding down a bridleway this morning, I was accosted by a “Daily Mail nimby” and her 4 dogs. She tried to tell me that I wasn’t allowed to ride on the bridleway I was on. I calmed and pleasantly explained that I was allowed on the bridleway, as were walkers and horse riders. She tried to tell me that I was only allowed on the byway that crossed the bridleway which was 50 metres away. I told her that all vehicles could use the byway she was talking about and I reiterated the fact that cyclists were allowed on the bridleway we were on.

As she obviously realised that I knew what I was talking about and that I wasn’t going to apologise and agree to not ride on the bridleway ever again, she changed the topic and started to complain to me about all the road cyclists that ride on the singletrack country roads. She moaned that they never yield to the cars on the country lanes. She told me that she was going to put her complaint in writing to the CTC and other cycling organisations.

I responded “Good luck with that one and rode off”

So she doesn’t want cyclists on the bridleways and she doesn’t want them on country roads.

    Not In My Back Yard!

And all of this because of the Daily Mail (Well I’m guessing she was a Daily Mail reader)

When if she’s into stereotyping just tell her how you hate dog walkers who leave dog eggs on the trail or hang them in plastic bags from trees.

Unfortunately some people are like that. You can’t use reason or a considered argument against their viewpoint because they are not starting from a considered or reasonable point!
They often change their focus of attack/complaining when you tell them exactly where they are wrong so it’s pointless really, just nod and smile and go on your merry way 🙂

I find it sad that we live in a country where this sort of attitude is not only acceptable but quite widely held. It leads to a very contemptuous view of cyclists as somehow 3rd class citizens, which leads to the kind of behaviour seen in that other thread about abusive drivers. And a large part of the media is allowed to encourage it.

How about having some aniseed-soaked sponge on a length of string so, when you meet her again you can draw her dogs off on a long chase?

Draw them off, then phone the council people and have them impounded, then she’ll have to pay to get them back?

    Or am i too horrible?

do dogs reallz go after aniseed?

if so, that’s a brillant idea muddy.

i’d have told her to **** off, but i get annoyed by idiots quite easily.

I just tell that sort I ride where I please with no thought for others, and tell them to call the cops if they want to.

To date no sign of the rozzers 🙂

So, were her dogs on leads and were they all under proper control? I might have mentioned something about the dog warden if they weren’t

Tell her you’ve noticed the same but it’s not good honest British cyclists it’s bloody immigrants and that they’re is a tsunami of road riding foreigners waiting at Calais to flood our roads with garish lycra.

Explain that you’ve noticed how when they stop at Tea shops they demand coffee and have no idea about which order to apply jam and cream to their scones.

Tell her that some of them sneak over, walking, Yes Walking, under the cover of a Burka before derobing and buying up our bikes.

You can’t reason someone out of a position they didn’t reason themselves into.

The news paper reader stereo type is the best

I’ve actually heard a seriuos debate on radio 4 (another great social group) about how we would catagorise people if news papers are replaced by the internet

    Mail on Sunday

Should have told her to contact that nice Peter Hitchens.

do dogs reallz go after aniseed?

yup. It is used to soak a fake hare to get dogs to chase someone as a fake hunt.

It’s also used on womens ‘bits’ to attract the dog to make p0rn films apparently.

@shotsaway, I believe what you encountered was what is commonly known as as a “moaning ****t”

Daily Mail readers are programmed to be irate, outraged, shocked and furious at absolutely anything and everyting that has ever happened, going to happen, or could happen (but probably won’t).

I find that telling these people that you love them is the best way forward. Perhaps blow them a kiss to add to the message.
