Kenda nevegals have been brilliant for me. Cheap as well
+1 for the Nevegals. Came as stock on my Sight. They were one of the first on the list for an upgrade, but in fact they've been so good I've left them on. They roll really well, they grip on the wet rocks and roots of the Peaks and Calderdale and they're good in the mud. Do seem to polarise opinion a bit though, but then which tyre doesn't..
by definition, going by user reviews, every tyre is both the biggest piece of cack ever that will shred to bits if it sees a stone, and all the knobs will fall off before you reach the end of the street AND also the best all round tyre ever made that will last for ages with excellent grip in most conditions.
I agree. For some reason, tyres especially bring out the very subjective points of view a lot of the time, especially regarding grip and suitability.
IMHO asking others to recommend a tyre is asking for a blunderbus of opinion. Everyone rides differently... some may be really fast 'all mountain' riders who love nothing more than a 3 hour blast on some techy fast stuff. They are gonna recommend and prefer a different type of tyre than someone who tends toward more XC rides and easier train centre stuff. So it is always a compromise, and each individual has to simply figure out where they want to make the compromise. The answer is not the same for everyone.
So your best best it to start at the mid placed tyres (Mountain Kings, Nobby Nicks etc) and take it from there... either buy something in that range and see what you feel (More grip? Less rolling resistance?), or if you think you know the answer, make your best guess.
good relatively cheap hard wearing grippy tire for all year round good on every surface
Purgatory 2-bliss, vfm and all-conditions winner imo. Never the best but a lot further from being the worst. Somehow feels good in loose, mud or fairly hard conditions.
