Watching Andre Rieu at the MiL’s as there’s bugger all else on. Wouldn’t be watching out of choice

    a) wtf have they put in the water? Half the audience are in tears and the rest seem a bit, well, amorous 😯
    b) am I missing something? Why the worship?

Old tunes played in an old fashioned way. (Some) old people love it. My dad does, he’s been to see him live at Maastricht too. More to music than Rock/pop/serious classical. I guess Rieu is a new James Last.

It’s very easy to be cynical, as every fibre of my being is shouting “wrong!” when watching, but at least his audience is going out of its way to feed their passion.
These must be the same people who enjoy other stuff that I have no comprehension of, like all-inclusive holidays, golf, daytime TV, cruises, smart casual.

We went to the Glasgow concert. It was pretty awful and my wife now says I’m a musical snob. I suspect I’ll be going again as she enjoyed it, but I’m much happier with longer form pieces. Of particular note was the 70s style referring to the ‘girls’ doing the clog dance while the ‘boys’ had a drink; but most of the audience were adults in the ’70s. The pipers weren’t bad.

Thankfully we’ve got tickets for Rigoletto in Palermo later this year and I will probably get her to a couple of National Youth Orchestra of Scotland concerts (one of my nephews is a member), and she might see the error of her ways, unless they play too many avant garde atonal pieces.

It’s pop classical music given a showbiz sheen and major production values. Absolutely not to my taste, but my late step-dad used to watch Rieu all the time, as did my mum, although she wasn’t so into him.
Appeals to the same sort of audience who like Liberace, and similar OTT, pop showbiz artists.

Quite, my folks did the all-inclusive holiday thing, in Europe and Canada/America, loved every minute, but they were in their 80’s.

He has smug raised to a whole new level, but it works for those that like him and he’s doing me no harm.

Wanted to try my new speaker on the telly and this knob was on.
    It’s not him , it’s the **** audience.
It’s like a convention of the easily offended.i had to check that this wasn’t recorded in the 80s.
    **** him ,**** them and **** off.
That’s me being nice as it’s christmas.

one of my neighbours asks me to record his shows whenever they pop up on sky

I don’t see the attraction but it’s clearly right up the street of some folk (and I’m pretty sure at least part of the attraction for my neighbour is the “girls” in the orchestra – not sure how long he’d listen to a CD of it)

I have him as Richard Clayderman plays the violin.

Ah yes, that’s probably a better comparison. Anyway I’ll be watching the Vienna Phil New Year’s Day concert. If that makes me a snob, so be it.

Went to a Jean Michelle Jarre concert a few years ago not realising the amount of Jarre love there would be.

He entered the arena right at the top back and walked through the crowd and people were climbing over each other to stroke him on the way past. Was utterly bizarre…

As like most it seems I don’t get it but my parents are keen.
They told me earlier today that his orchestra is the only self funded touring orchestra. All of the others have some financial backing. So he is doing something right!

Is that what a family Christmas is these days, having to put up with whatever shite the oldies want on telly?
Why are they allowed to be offended by stuff and ‘we’ aren’t ?
Thank gawd I got to go to me brother’s and play games. We did watch Home Alone, but that had me in tears! 😀

Well admittedly there is a bigger audience for shite than culture.

Why are they allowed to be offended by stuff and ‘we’ aren’t ?

Yeah well, they won the referendum.

    😀 +1 about the hedgehogs

First saw one of his concerts on tv about 5 years ago, I’d never heard of him at that time and was flabbergasted at what I was seeing. Why was everyone crying and so emotional at the music which was doing nothing for me? Why was his skin that weird orange colour? Does he shop at the same wig shop as trump? Why does he look so smug? Why is the BBC showing some weird cult worship gathering? Soooo many questions. I was freaked out and had to change channels.

For the same reasons as I posted in the “ call the midwife “ thread, I love him.

Because it keeps a certain type of population inside, comatose and off the streets.

You do understand Programmes are made for this very reason, don’t you? You do… don’t you?

Analogy for Brexit, except that’s not just for Christmas.

I came across one of these last week, remembered this thread, and watched a bit of it.

First thoughts were “Good grief, this makes Classic FM look high brow”. However as I watched a bit more (helped by some wine and a warm, fuzzy holiday feeling) I sort of began to “get it”. Not to everyone’s taste certainly, but the people there were having a great time and really enjoying themselves. The music was cheesy but good fun, and there was plenty cleavage on display.

And if you don’t like it, well you’re not exactly being forced to watch it are you?

Plus, if it helps get even a few more folk into classical music that can only be a good thing.
