Just a wee update: My folks treated me to a day's winter skills course with Ben of Inspire Mountaineering up on Aonach Mor.
We didn't have time to do anything super-thorough but he talked us through the basic warning signs for avalanches, showed us a few variations of the ice axe arrest, and spent a good bit of time on a steep snow field with the crampons and the axes. 2 layers of Merino and a Gore thermal top under my waterproof seemed to do the trick, as did my Endura leg warmers underneath some decent Spray Way overtrousers a picked up from Nevissport.
Unfortunately this revealed the inadequacy of my 3 season boots and basic crampons with no front points, so its back to Outside Edge in Oban for some Grivel crampons and Scarpa Mana boots!
Hoping to do a day's walk (I didn't have enough space for my camping gear in the luggage) from Ballachulish, up Gleann an Fiodh to Sgorr a'Choise then staying up high to Fraochaidh, before descending to Duror and checking out a bothy I'd heard about in the vicinity.
