TBF (sorry), half of these aren’t STW (oops) acronyms, but rather generic Internet acronyms.

Thinking about it, I’m suprrised that the Urban Dictionary’s definition of us never made it into an acronym; WMCCB. (-:

As we’re vaguely near the subject (sorry, I’ve been WFH last few days) – is there any chance of an overhaul of the smiley things?

I’d like to see a few more myself – plus removal of 🙄 as it instantly makes me want to murder anyone else that uses it (although it makes them easier to identify)

I’m trying to think of others I’ve only seen here. I don’t recall seeing [EDIT: snagged by the annoying-phrase filter] or FTFY (Fixed That For You) elsewhere.

Are the extended -TFU ones unique to STW? Ie, “[Something] The Heck Up”? STFU and MTFU (Shup and Man respectively) are commonplace, but I’ve never seen the likes of “DogTFU” other than here.

NSFW is a useful one. Its Not Suitable For W(Gentleman’s relaxation)ing. Basically a picture or video that is so tame or inoffensive you could happily open it in front of you granny or at work.

I could never understand YMMV. I mean, in context, you can understand it but I could never work out what the words making up the acronym would be. Dr Google tells me it’s Your Mileage May Vary which clarifies everything…..

    GrahamS
    Full Member

Assuming you ellipsis indicate sarcasm: the “Your Mileage May Vary” phrase originates from car adverts where they quote the MPG of the car.

FTFY – fixed that for you

Is LMGTFY one? Googling usually provides the answer (and often an explanation – thanks GrahamS 🙂 )

    beej

YMMV is from US car commercials, where they claim an MPG but have the disclaimer.

In other words – your experiences may be different.

    EDIT – Too slow.

I’ve always thought there should be an STW meme sticky, with the origin. Pudding, octopron, slats, bombers etc.
