Someone I know asked me? as they thought I might have come across someone else with this.
They can run short distances no problem, about 4 miles.
But they said they sometimes get really short of breath and think they have a high HR when doing moderate exercise like walking the stairs, just randomly. But never ever get it when running.
Nothing when they saw a doctor.

Not surprised you’re having problems if you can’t wait more than 2 minutes for a response

Tjnr @ 35 ended up seeing a heart specialist last year for similar issues. Short of breath, feeling dizzy whilst training. At the time he was under a bit of stress(still is)and is asthmatic. He also drinks(imo)too much Coke and coffee. Nothing was ever found and he is running 40ml off road marathon type races 😮

Get a proper medical, lung capacity, electro cardiogram and specilaist consultant analysis. Mrs B can deal with running/biking on flat ground but as soon as there is any climbing she struggles with breathing and this leads to elevated heart rate. Hers is a lung issue.

Sounds like high blood pressure. As does the above. From trekster.

I did ask if they were sure it was the heart.
I’ve heard non sporty mates complain about severe pain thinking it was heart, and it would turn out to be muscular. I know this person hardly ever drinks, but does consume coffee and coke instead?

    Sounds familiar.

I can ride the bike for hours at a decent pace without issue but occasionally get a racing heart when doing something normal like stairs or even just getting up quickly after a period of not moving.
Had the GP take a look and all he saw was a low resting HR of 40-45 and a arrhythmic heartbeat (misses every 8th beat). Nothing to worry about at all but sent me to a specialist anyway who got me to use a HR monitor for a few days. After wearing it for a week, a few days at work with one lazy day and two biking, he spotted that the combination of going from rest to medium efforts quickly triggered my HR to go mental for a few seconds. Doing continuous exercise or not much was fine. He basically explained it as the heart had real trouble finding the correct speed to run at when going from rest to something like a brisk walk due to the odd heartbeat but it quickly settled down. While it tries to find the right speed it varies from slow to fast, meaning the supply of blood to the muscles goes all strange and the lungs try to cope by breathing heavy and fast. Only lasts a few seconds and now I know what it is it’s fine but a bit alarming initially! Occasionally get a sharp pain round the heart when it happens but never for more than a second or two.

I’m a teetotal tea-drinker too if that helps at all.

I recently went through a second round of tests after getting some palpitations, and basically have the same issue as milky1980 except the other way around – my heart gets confused when coming down from exercise to rest causing eptopic beats. My recent palps ere diagnosed as just a “mis timing” of things. Apparently is happens to many people in normal life but can be exaggerated eg more frequent by “athletic” performance. I was cleared of anything.

But – best your friend gets a checkup anyway.

    Anxiety?

If anything exercise relieves symptoms of anxiety. Though moderate exercise of climbing the stairs maybe not, but I wouldn’t expect shortness of breath though. High HR or pounding heart, and a pile of other weird symptoms with anxiety yes. Running or riding bikes though is a major benefit to anxiety.

In early days of getting more active I used to find post bike ride my HR would stay up in the 70s/80s for half a day after the ride and eventually fall down to 60. Occasionally felt light headed after standing too. Over time that’s all gone away. HR drops fairly quick post ride and even when stopping during a ride. If I don’t drink any alcohol my resting rate at home can drop down to 40ish sometimes. Freaks me out when it does that, wondering if the thing is still beating! 😀

The shortness of breath may be worth checking out. More so if any chest or arm pain accompanies it. Though I’d expect it to be worse when running etc if it’s anything bad.

Mind you, I find lugging supermarket shopping into the house can make me feel knackered, but a bike ride is fine.

When i had anxiety disorder shortness of breath was definately a symptom i had.

Had all the heart tests at the time and all was ok.

Looking back its pretty impressive the symptoms you can get with anxiety – some pretty scary ones as well.

Always best to get it checked out by a doctor initially.

Anxiety can pretty much give you the symptoms of everything, which makes it very confusing and the anxiety worse. I guess shortness of breath is one symptom. Just that exercise though is far more likely to knock the anxiety on the head, at least for a bit. Climbing the stairs is probably not enough though. I wouldn’t expect expending effort to make you short of breath with anxiety. More that you get short of breath just even standing around or sitting. Though everyone is different.

If they’re fine normally when not doing exercise, but get shortness of breath during exercise, then it cold be Asthma Induced Exercise.
I had to diagnose myself because when I went to the docs to get checked out, I wasn’t exercising, so the doc never found anything wrong and said I was fine.
I got a basic inhaler and it has made a huge difference.
