thinking of going back to 9spd as i miss the ease of shifting with Rapid-Rise. in order to get up the hills mountains i need the 22t granny ring up front.

    are these compatible between 9 & 10spd?

otherwise, is there a way of bodging a 10spd mech to make it work like Rapid-Rise of old?

i’ve still got two good (one new!) XT Rapid Rise mechs in the spares box.

Yes, but its worth noting that some of the much older Shimano (pre HT2) granny rings may require the tabs to be filed down in order to clear the bb shell but its unlikely you’ll come across these now.
