    So, I usually ride 2×9 (36t&22t x 11-34) or 36:16 SS

why am i buying (relatively) expensive 9-speed chains, links, sprocket?
(except for the historic 9speed index shifter)

Couldn’t you save yourself a wad of cash by building a rig on 1×8 or even 2×7 for example?
Would the cash saved buy additional lightweight components to offset the meagre weight gain?
would the ratios be wildly off?
    would the consumables last longer?
Would it get me burned at the stake?

8 speed cassettes are lighter than 9 speed so you save weight there as well

8-speed definitely lasted better and clogged less.

I run 8spd on 3 of my 4 bikes. 1×8, 2×8 (Hammerschmidt arriving next week :-)) and 3×8. would have had it on the 4th as well if I hadn’t had a semi-retired 9spd drivetrain kicking around when I built it. 8spd is lighter, cheaper, smoother and more reliable. Win all round. it may be a controversial viewpoint, but I reckon the old 8spd XT/XTR kit was the best stuff Shimano ever made. XTR mech, XT M737 cassette, Attack 8spd shifter + SRAM chain and you’ll be in heaven.

I’m on 8 speed too, cheaper and indexing lasts longer.
