Is it just the chainrings designed specifically for the different 9-/10-speed chains?

I’ve got a 1 x 9 setup and will want to upgrade to 1 x 10 eventually, but for now, I just want new crank arms. I have a ceramic Hope BB, so I’ve no need for the chainrings or BB that comes with an XT crankset.

Can I just buy the crank arms from anywhere?

I did the same; no problems. There was a thread on mtbr where they showed that the distance between the rings is slightly narrower on a 10-spd chainset (by a fraction of a millimetre iirc).

The chainrings are the same (Shimano are at least).
