It’s a way off in September, so no rush, but I haven’t got a clue what to do to get mates and family together for a bash.
There’s little chance of a ‘surprise’ bash, because that’s not our style, but I’d like to do something other than the usual birthday of a night out on the lash in the local town.
Please nothing too expensive and nothing abroad, although if you want to share your experiences of mega birthday bashes then feel free.
A cottage in the lakes for the weekend has crossed my mind, but that’s rather unoriginal as my mother did that for her 50th.
I went for a bike ride in the west pennines with my best mate on the day of my 40th, then a couple of months later just had a big party at a local social club for family & friends. Pretty standard stuff really.
Like “footflaps”, I went to NY for a week with my wife and it was definitely a holiday I will never forget for the right reasons. That said it doesn’t have to be the same to be memorable.
i would have a good night out with all my mates and then a weekend away or a nice day out somewhere with my other half, if you have one.
i try not to mix family and friends, they dont get on.
i took my ex to the lakes for the weekend for his birthday, with our bikes. not sure if it was such a good idea though cuz he dumped me when we got home!
Fancy dress is the way I went. Had an “Invent your own superhero/villain party” w/ live bands and DJ last year for my 40th. The costumes made for great conversation starters between different friends who didn’t know each other.
Also, I eventually realised that I wanted to have a party that was a kind of antidote for mates who were feelin’ weird/stressed by turning forty, all of whom really made a crackin’ effort with their costumes.
It was a good night:
“KrackAddict” of the band “The Cereal Killers” checkin’ out the eyeball pinata…
“Manspider”. This is what happens when an unsuspecting arachnid gets bitten by a radiocative, 9 to 5, leisure suit-wearing, golf-at-the-weekends kinda guy.
“PunkMunk”. I was “Lippy Wrongstocking” (AKA “The Anarchic Acolyte of the Absurd”) on guitar in the background.
“JudgeMental” and “AuntArctica”.
The Pinata.
“The Fister” with his arm around “Thunder Thighs”.
I’m renting a big ol’ house in Pembrokeshire for a weekend in June and getting all my good friends round for a weekend by the beach with booze, food and games – just generally kicking back and having a good time with the people you love.
Ideally I’d have liked to camp for the weekend somewhere nice but a few people coming just aren’t campers and we’re not so weather dependent in a house.
I am also at bursting levels of excitement and it’s five months away! 😀

What’s the girl in the black dress on the right of the 1st photo come as?
For my wife’s 40th we hired a big house for the weekend with enough space to sleep a load of mates and their kids and got some outside caterers in for the dinner on the Saturday night.
For my 40th she took me to Verbier for a weekend’s mountain biking and hiking with no kids! I know which one I enjoyed most! 😉
My 40th in 2 months time .. not being a drinker, I didnt see the point in throwing a party.
Instead, I intend entering a few enduro type events this year ( so far got entries to a 50k mtb on March 6th and the 200k Dragon ride June ) .. they arent my type of thing as a general rule. Too many of the geeky/lycra types I usually prefer to avoid at such events…
But its my 40th, so just proving to myself its just a number.
For my 40th 2 years ago I went riding round the forest with mates with a few pub stops, and got home to find a gazebo in the garden, a whole lamb roasting (serious yum!) and a whole barrel (72 pints) of Ringwood Best. Oh and a bunch of friends and family.

well….she had some wings and was kind of a last minute attendee…
but check out the woman in the background with the crazy painted face…just about to turn 50 and her character involved killing small, warm-blooded pets!!
My 40th in the Autumn and will probebly get a Box at Kingsholm, Gloucester for a lads day out. And a Party some other time, possibly a joint 40th in Cheltenham.
