To occupy some of my free time in 'Joblesstrackworld', I've decided to scan all my film negatives to my laptop.
As I have very little of my redundancy money left I need recommendations for a cheap negative scanner or if anyone knows of a place where I can hire one. Or, getting really cheeky, if someone has one I could borrow for the duration for which I would happily pay insured postage both ways.

I have a MicroTek Filmscan35 (Primefilm 1800u) which I'd happily lend you for however long you need. Having said that, looking at the price of newer, higher resolution models, I wonder if it would really be worthwhile paying the postage. Email me though and we'll see what we can do?
I use an Epson flat bed with negative adapter. I only really bought a flat bed as it I need to scan odd size negatives from a rotary lens camera. I have been pleasantly surprised by the results.
I've got a minolta dimage that you can borrow if you want. I haven't used it for a while, so will have to check it's working ok - it had a quirk though, of sometimes ejecting the film carrier after scanning the first frame of a strip.
It's a lot smaller than a flatbed scanner, so postage wouldn't be much- wher are you?
the guardian were doing them for £12.95
for a decent one Jessops do one (Might be that Microtek one above) that used to be £170. It could scan to higher resolutions and produce TIFF files rather than just JPEGS like the cheap ones meaning you are getting as good a quality as you could. It came with basic adjustment software I think.
Where are you based? If in London or nearby, I could help you out. I have a high-res Minolta Dimage scanner, which gives very high quality scans.

I've got about 3,000 negatives which I just want an electronic scan of so in terms of time I'd rather waste my own rather than someone elses.
Back to plan A with apologies to druidh and vinnyeh.
Vinnyeh where are you in the UK and would you be prepared to loan/ship your scanner to me? email as above.

TBH, buying a scanner of your own woon't be a bad investment. Try Jessops; they've always got a good range of stuff. And oyu could either flog it on ebay, after, or just keep it (you can charge others to scan in old pics and that, make a couple of quid here and there).
John, that's a lot of negs, and it'll take a long time to run them through. Should occupy you for a few weeks.

Jova54, If you're interested I've got my Dad's Nikon Coolscan LS-30 for sale. I was about to put it onto evilbay for him but if you're interested I'm sure he'd prefer to sell without using the 'bay'.
