I guess this is different to gearing on a 26er. What sort of ratios do people run? I find 2:1 on my 26er a bit twiddly and prefer to run a slightly bigger gear. How does that translate to the world of 29ers?

    32:18 on a 29er is very close to 32:16 on a 26er

I run 32:16 most of the time on my SS 29er for the same reason
I use 180 cranks to get bit of extra leverage up some of the climbs though
    thats round the New forest

I do run 32:18 or even 32:20 for stuff like MMayhem and The South Downs Way

32:16 might be a good starting point for a 29er if it's too spinny on a 26er. What gear ratio do you run on your 26er?

32:17 is a good gear if you like to push a little harder than the standard.

32:16 would be hell if you live anywhere fairly hilly.

as above two extra teeth on the back (roughly) compensates for the wheel size…

normally run 32:18/19 but recently been pushing 32:17 but it made my knees hurt!

    32:16 26 = 32:18 29er flattish
    32:18 26 = 32:20 29er hillyish

On a 26er I run 34:15/16/17 depending on what I am doing at the time. The 15 is the race gear, the 16 most of the time, the 17 when I am feeling wimpy.

32:19 on my 29er Salsa Selma, then I never have to faff with ratios.

Was just going thro this issue in my head while having tea. Slogged my way around Back'O'Skiddaw today with 32:16 on my new Scandal and was thinking about 32:17 or if I had enough chain 32:18.

34:18 but think its a bit big so going to 34:19, ran 32:18 for ages and it was fine for most stuff
