Sorry this has probably been covered a zillion times but my searches didn't really help.

Do I buy the same size frame as I'd ride in a 26" and keep in mind it's only the wheel diameter that's changed or do I need to think further than that, i.e. run a shorter stem , inline post, neither or both.

I ride a Large Cotic Soda 2010 (19" seat tube, 24" top tube), layback Thomson post (Sorry) and a 90mm stem. I'm 5'11"
I want to bulid a Yeti Big Top, I think I want large (19" seat tube 24.8" top tube)

Would I run the same stem and post spec as on my Cotic and try to get the same ride position or should I be thinking differently to get the handling right?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Same size (though obviously different brands size differently) though it's not uncommon for 29ers to have long top tubes so you may use a shorter stem to keep the same reach.

If you're comfy on your current set-up you don't want another 0.8" reach so I'd get a shorter stem to compensate. Would depend a bit on seat tube angle whether or not you'd keep the same seatpost

I'd be wary about adjusting reach with a shorter stem. The steep head angles on 29ers can make them twitchy with the currently fashionable 50mm stems.
Do yeti have any guidance on their website? If not I'd email them.

personally after riding two 29er that were same sizing as my 26er ive gone for a size down on my new karate monkey and its a much better fit tbh.

with the bigger sizes i had 70mm and 60mm stems but with my monkey i have a 90mm and it feels much better/less twitchy

based on the geo they have on the websites i think your right, a Large sounds best. Its a shame they dont list the reach/stack on the yeti site to compare to the cotic (think Cy posted those details for the soul on the forum somewhere). The Yeti has a 72deg seat compared to the 73deg on the soul so the effective top-tube measurement is a bit skewed as the Yeti would come out longer because of that, prob not by 0.8" but enough to consider the 2 frames a comparable size.

Firestarter +1 (and clubber is talking b0llocks not surprisingly ). Go a size down. Remember a 29er has a longer toptube and the standover is 1 1/2" higher due to the bigger wheels. Only caviat on that is how much smalle rthe next size down is.

29er seem to typically have longer top tubes than comparable 26" bikes and I figure this is to allow a shorter stem to get the front end feeling a bit faster which compensates (along with geo) for the heavier wheel.

For example singular swift has a top tube about 20mm longer for the same size as the 26" hummingbird.

So you're suggesting that singular have two sizing methods (eg M to XL) for 26 and 29? That's talking rubbish.

youve only had one ten mins clubber what do you know only messing mate lol , to the op its best to try out if you can tho but in my experience a size down was by far the better fit for me

I'm the same height, and ride medium sized bikes, with approximately a 23" effective TT length, and a 90mm stem generally. I also have an On One Inbred 29er, and deliberated over the 16" or the 18" version before buying as they're pretty long. I ended up buying the 18" version (23.7" effective TT) and fitted a 10mm shorter stem to make it feel more normal to me.

Try one out for size first, you may find you want to go down a size from what you think you need, or at least end up fitting a shorter stem.

Go a size down. Remember a 29er has a longer toptube and the standover is 1 1/2" higher due to the bigger wheels

Not always (often they have the same length TT as a 26" wheeled equivalent), the standover won't be any higher really (BB height won't be any different), but you will have 3" less gonad clearance over the rear wheel when you're hanging off the back, and the wheelbase will most likely be 2" or therabouts longer than an equivalent 26" wheeled hardtail. All based on my own measurements and ownership experiences you will understand.

My 26er Santa cruz is a 21" and 26er Titus a 21 1/2". Both feel perfect. My Swift is a 20" and my Ti29er a 19 1/2". The Ti 29er feels perfect, the Swift just a bit to big (about 1/2" ), but an 18" would be way too small for me.

As said, best to try.

Which is exactly my point about different brands' sizing that I made in the first post... If you'd said that you xl swift felt right but that you xl hummingbird was too big THEN you might have a point.

But isn't the KM funny sizing? E.g an 18" is actually measured to centre of top tube (not top of seat tube) and their 16" is more like a 'normal' 18" frame?

I've run an 18" 456 and medium Soul with 80/90mm stems and then onto various On-one 18" 29ers with 80/90mmm stems. I wouldn't, personally want to size down for a 29er. I'm now on a TD-1 with a 24" tt and 70mm stem.

clink not sure tbh mine measures 16 front centre bb to top of top tube. the seat tube stick up a bit further. to confuse matters tho id forgotten about my first 29er a fisher rig that was fantastic to ride and a 17 . so yeah try before you buy lol

my rig is shorter - coupled with a short stem but i like it that way

my merida is the longest thing known to man - any longer and i have to ride it in a prone position - but i also like it like that !

both are size large

I've a 29" & a 26" Inbred,both are 20" frames & both have 90mm stems.They both feel the same fit-wise as well.....

redted - the only real answer is to try it out and see what size fits, no-one can tell you if brand A 29er is the same as brand B 26er. I went down an inch or so on my Scandal, but it depends on the bike.

Ha ha not really. It's weird, I've always ridden biggish bikes, 58 road,, 19"MTB, My mates are all the same height as me, but ride 56 or 18, I can't fit their bikes, they don't like mine yet I still look fine on mine and it doesn't look daft proportion wise, This is what's getting me on to the 29er thing, because I reckon I'd take to it pretty well. The Big Top is the only thing I've seen that floats my boat and I've got an 11 speed Alfine hub that I wan't to put on something. I like the custom cable routing options on it and reckon I could rig the Alfine up on it pretty neatly with their "chip" system dropouts and I don't think it would need a tensioner.
I just wasn't sure if the short stem long top tube thing was still applicable on a 29er. Some good answers though. I'm hoping to see one at Eurobike that I can sling a leg over and pick some brains there. Thanks for your replies.

As per emac65 I have an 18" 26er Tinbred and 18" 29er Scandal, and the frame fit is the same, I use the same length stem and seatpost on both, however I measured the BB height the other day and the 29er is approx 3/4" higher. I can't say I have noticed the different height of the BB when riding, although I have caught my bashguard less often with the 29er.

I also ride a GT Peace 9r but because the Scandal has sliding dropouts and the wheel is as far forward as it will go, this means that the Scandal feels a lot more alive when on the trails and its easier to hop the front wheel up and to do wheelies (if that way inclined).
