  • 27" wheels and quill stem for restoration build

I’m rebuilding/restoring my girl friend’s mothers old 50s/60s Viking town bike.

So far I’ve had the frame resprayed got a new headset and BB for it.

The wheels are far too rusty/pitted to warrant repairing so I’m looking to buy some new ones. Where can I get a pair of 27″ polished rim wheels? Also I need to be able to fit a 4sp cassette from the old wheel which looks in pretty decent condition.

I’m buying some new bars and need a new stem as the old one is smaller than standard size and there’s no compatible bars. Here’s what I’m going to get:

So I need an appropriate quill stem for 1″ steerer that is similar to this

Also, does anyone know anything about these derailleurs? Spare parts, appropriate chain?

Any help much appreciated as I’ve no idea about old bikes!

You might have a bit of trouble. A couple of things. Four speed was I think spaced at 116mm anything new will be 130mm.
The cheapest option is to buy some 700c hybrid wheels with nutted axle and threaded for ‘freewheel’. Then remove an equal amount of spacer from each side, that’ll save re dishing.
Though 700c wheels are slightly smaller, a pair of 28mm tyres fills out the space nicely.
Your brakes if typical of the period should have adjustment to allow for the drop in rim size.

Try velobase for info and velosolo for new ‘old style’ bits.

Any bikeshop that deals with Fisher should be able to get you these in which have a nice chrome finish but don’t make braking a life-robbing experience-

They should fit the cassette unless it’s something really bizarre. Make sure the tyre is 27×1 1/4 though- if it’s not you may be stuck. You’ll also have to faff with spacers a touch, removing 20mm of them. This is pretty easy, done it on Wilko wheels a few times to suit my fixed frames.

As for stems. You have 3 options-

    1- ebay for a 1″ quill stem.

2- Get a new one like this- http://www.cyclesuk.com/1011/458-483055

3- Use an adaptor and a normal ahead stem-

As for the Benelux mech, no idea really. Unlikely you’ll get spares for one, but fortunately it just uses a standard hub gear cable set up. Pictures on google look like standard 4/5/6 speed chains. I can’t find one in a quick google- only 5/6/7/8 ones which may not suit the 4speed set up. I know we’ve got an older 4/5/6 style chain at work that may suit, they’re about £6.

You may be as well buying a non-collectable bike of ebay, an old townsend or something, then stripping wheels, stem etc off it.

Thanks for all your information guys. This has helped me out no end! I’ll be looking into those wheels tomorrow. The frame has a 120mm spacing. Would they do them in this size?

I’ve just found the deraileur says 3/32 chain for 4 speed cassette so that’s sorted.

Those velo shops have some nice brakes that look a bit more vintage which will be nice because the old ones are pretty shot.

again, thanks for all the ideas and directions. I’ve spent more time on the internet looking for information than working on the bike!

Like I say, I’ve shrunk them down in the past so you’ll be fine but they do come as 130 (I think). Just needs spacers removing. Or order the appropriate cup’n’cone axle at the same time.

Those North Road bars are a Raleigh product and available much cheaper than £22. I don’t think I’ve paid more than £15 for them.

Try Halfords or your lbs can order them. They’re called something like touring bars – best to see the catalogue.

There’s plenty chrome stems available, but an alloy GB stem would be nicer and will polish up beautifully even if it looks daggy.

To do a nice job of the wheels look for Dunlop stainless steel rims. They won’t be cheap and will probably be 36 hole. (I have a pair somewhere – I’ll check.)

Edit: can’t find the bars on the Raleigh site although their header shows them, but Fisher have them

North Road… Cycle Surgery stock them for £15, but lots of places sell them for £12… last pair i bought were Zoom brand ones from Station Cycles in Cambridge.

    example online here:

as for old hubs etc, I have a set of crusty 27″ wheels think they would clean up.. they are free if you need them (woking or london for collection)

this place might help out with old older bits

also well worth posting wanted ads on the CTC forum – the beardies on their are bound to have loads of old stuff

Is it the hub that is broken on the wheels, or just the rim?

If the hub is okay, then it’d be easiest just to swap in a new rim (and spokes if you need it). If it’s an old steel rim currently, by sticking in an alloy rim you also gain the ability to brake.

SJS sell a few 27″ rims:

Also, our local dodgy second hand bike shop seems to have a pile of rubbishy 27″ racers most of the time for 30-50 quid, be worth seeing how many parts would swap nicely off one of them?
