2003 Primera 1.8 petrol. Fast idle, suggested causes?

OK I am on a bit of a roll with STW this last month.
So far the collective have helped me fix my nephews crap mundano handbrake. Tim at Sidways cycles has helped the family find the most perfect Labrador imaginable (appologies to Mrs Tim).

So my next question.

My aestheticaly undiscerning mate has bought a 2003 Primera estate. Its not a bad car, other than a slight oil leak and needing a new auxilary belt. It does however have a fast idle (approx 1000-1100RPM).

Now a bit like Neo in the Matrix I can hear the "inevitability" of me getting roped in to fix this bloomin sunderJap car. Any suggestions on what might be the cause?

Come on folks help convince another person of the power of STW hive mind.

Thanks molgrips. Don't have a reader that would do for this (just have one for my A2). Is there a specific sensor that could cause this?
Also thought I might check for split hoses.

Dunno. Fast idle could be caused by mixture issues I suppose or something else confusing the ECU. When the engine's cold it probably increases the revs (it still does this when warm, right?) so there might be a temperature sensor going wrong that makes the engine think it's cold all the time. Stuff like that.

The temperature sensors are usually easy to find as they are plugged into the radiator hose near the engine. You could try disconnecting them, and/or aplying a voltage to the plug to see if it makes a difference.

Welcometo the world of Primera faults

I own 51 reg 1.8, so far uneven tickover has required replacement of timing chain, crank/cam sensor, coil pack on cylinder 1 and full strip clean/test of injectors.

and guess what the engine warning light is still on and "hunts" on part throttle, apparently there are faults with wirin looms!!!!

certainly dont go applying voltage to wiring harness you will fry the ecu!! the sensors only work up to 5volts.worth trying cleaning the throttle butterfly with carb cleaner, if it is not completely closed will cause fast idle.most probably an air leak somewhere if no lights are on.

Fair point, it was an old pre-ecu car that I tried it on

Could be an air leak. Get a can of wd40(other brands available) and spray it around all of the engine, while running. If the revs increase even further for a short period of time it has an air leak. Other than that can't help other than it might be a sender somewhere. You can buy fault code readers and dvd's from ebay for not a lot and they should help?

Otherwise a duuuuuuuuullllll reliable car.

Sometimes you get fault codes without engine light on. But usually minor things...
