So – eldest has outgrown his existing bike, and it’s time to go up a wheel size.

Apart from the usual Frog / Islabike suspects, any other suggestions I haven’t considered?

EDIT – he’s just announced it needs to be blue……

    Cheers,

What is the expected use for the bike?

    Cyclepaths? singletrack? etc.
Are you going to be leaving it outside school?

    Plans to upgrade or not?

(The main thing probably being if it has a cassette or freewheel)

I suppose it depends on the intended use and how often it gets used.

My daughter has a Carrera Luna 20″ which is in the process of having a few things changed – mainly the gearing and forks.

I picked it up second hand, hardly used for £50.

It’s not in the same league as Isla or Frog for weight, but it was a bike she liked the look of, and also, lets face it a bike I could tinker with to make it a bit better.

She’s had no problems on an 11 mile ride around Lake Vyrnwy and several 5-6 mile rides over Cannock Chase.

Pinnacle. Cheaper and as well designed.

Sorry, going to be boring here…

Honestly, for most use cases the cheapest and best option is a used Islabike Beinn 20. Buy a used one for around £200, keep it for a couple of years and sell it again for around £200 (more, even, if the prices keep rising).

If you can, get the later generation bike – the one with the narrower saddle – as it has numerous improvements and will be easier to sell when you inevitably grow out of it. Parts are cheaply and easily available directly from Islabikes and the bikes are absolutely excellent.

I did say that it wasn’t very exciting, but with the still incredible resale values of used Islabike and never-ending demand, any other kids bike will almost certainly work out more expensive over the long term.
