So are road and mtb 11speed chains the same and if I buy some in bulk can I use them on both my road and mtb? Or is there a difference? Cheers

    The same.

    Not the same, but interchangeable.

Road chains have slightly different profiling on the outer plates to improve front shifts. MTB ones are designed to optimise rear shifts.

    You won’t notice the difference.

That was the case for Shimano 10spd chains but very not the case for their 11spd ones. HG901 is duraace/xtr, HG701 is ultegra/xt.
