Day 20 – 30 Days of Biking

by 3

If you’ve not heard of it before, 30 Days of Biking is a personal challenge with a charitable edge. People pledge to ride their bike every day in April, and for every two that do, 1USD is donated to World Bicycle Relief. This year we have six riders attempting the challenge.

Day 20

T-10. Start your countdown here. The end is in sight and it’s all feeling quite achievable as the sun shines down and we go into vitamin D charged hyperdrive.

Oh my eyes! (those shoes)

Finally, I get to channel my inner Wookie! First proper ride post Dirty Reiver, a ride in shorts, no thermals, no winter gloves, the sun was out and the wind got to whistle through my winter leg plumage. It felt good, I’m looking forward to the warmth again.

Is Greg riding in flares?

Sitting in work, watching the cursor blink, unaware of how nice it was outside. The benefits of a windowless office are often overlooked. But it was hard to forget how nice it was on my ride from the station. A busy day saw no lunch, and a chance to bail early. On the train I’d planned a route, nothing long, but something fun. In the door, ditch the bag and clothes – grab the new team kit and skinny tubed XC bike.  No phone, no gloves, no tubes, not bottle – just me, my bike, an idea and one gear. The first day in a week without painkillers or anti-inflammatories. The first day of the month going really fast. Bring it on summer.

Calderdale. Jealous much?

Out to play in the sun on the way to pick up the kids from school. Checked out a cheeky new trail and nearly ran over a sunbathing cat. Scared a couple of Highland cows which then ran off into the woods and left me wondering where they were and if they were going to be round the next bend. I was having so much fun I kept adding on little bits more – I wonder what’s up here? – until eventually, inevitably, I emerged from the bushes next to school, late, mud spattered, and having had a mini adventure.

Generic but pleasing bike/sky/sunset shot

Despite a day out of smartness, sensibleness and adulthood (I faked it) I still managed a double whammy of riding today, including a rather splendid sunset hill ride.

Where’s my cake and candles? I’m 80 you know.

My biking buddy and I headed out after work to make the most of the evening sunshine and the dry local trails.  In amongst the loveliness we dropped by to wish the local trig point a belated happy birthday.

Making hay while the sun shines

It might last, it might not. There’s a May bank holiday approaching which is usually a good sign that it’ll turn back to wind and rain. So get out there now while the sun shines and feed your soul.

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.

Question for Giles about that “bike” He is onto something for sure.
What travel rock shox was it and what was it reduced to?

    Blinding shoes!

It’s a RockShox TK Gold 27.5 reduced to 80mm travel by Loco Tuning, QR not bolt thru. Geometry is race CX when laden, wee bit heavy but with large volume tyres makes for like riding a magic carpet!

Ta much appreciated. Exactly. Long day in saddle. Arms, hands and shoulders would be smiling. Did not think of being able to do it with a 27.5 fork. Makes sense. 🙂
