Renthal Unleash the 1XR Chainring

by 9

They’ve been working on this for 18 long months, but finally Renthal is ready to announce the 1XR narrow/wide chainring.

Renthal 1XR
Look at the teeth on that…

It’s been designed to work specifically in muddy (ie British) conditions – the ‘wide’ parts have been machines to allow more mud to clear, and increase chain life; it’s hard anodised and is supposed to keep that chain firmly on those teeth.image001 We’ve got one in to test, so keep ’em peeled for a review in the near future!

Here are the features they’re claiming for it:

  •          Alternating 1.8 / 3.5mm width teeth
  •          CNC machined 7075 T6 Aluminum
  •          Hard anodized surface finish
  •          Mud grooves in the tooth bed
  •          Ultra stiff I-Beam cross section
  •          Mud clearance and wear-proof profiling
  •          104mm BCD, 32, 34, 36 and 38t

More details here. Price from $59.90; UK price TBC

Barney Marsh takes the word ‘career’ literally, veering wildly across the road of his life, as thoroughly in control as a goldfish on the dashboard of a motorhome. He’s been, with varying degrees of success, a scientist, teacher, shop assistant, binman and, for one memorable day, a hospital laundry worker. These days, he’s a dad, husband, guitarist, and writer, also with varying degrees of success. He sometimes takes photographs. Some of them are acceptable. Occasionally he rides bikes to cast the rest of his life into sharp relief. Or just to ride through puddles. Sometimes he writes about them. Bikes, not puddles. He is a writer of rongs, a stealer of souls and a polisher of turds. He isn’t nearly as clever or as funny as he thinks he is.

Shame they are only doing a 104bcd version, absolute black, works components etc are offering a variety of fitting options.

Knowing Renthal, they probably have all sorts of other chainring drillings in the works. For example, they only list 32-38T and we’ve had a 30T in for test (but no photos) for a while. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes, so expect SRAM, XTR etc at some point I’d think.

You’d expect them to do the most common BCD first though right?

They look sweet. Just need some gold/green cranks to match.

I would so like a 32T ring for my Sram XX crankset but I’m not even sure its possible!

Why is the USD pricing out, but the UK cost isn’t available yet?
    Just curious.

What’s taken 18 months? It looks the same as all other n/w rings.

The renthal logo looks like a cheap plastic sticker which will just fall off. Why have they done that?

Well there won’t have been any development costs – it’s basically how they’ve been doing their off-road motorcycle sprockets for years.

CRAIG 5 I assume because its pre production and the one Chipps has is a “press” sample where they want the name to standout in photos
