Tuesday Treats 71: Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery

by 0

Your once a week dose of retail therapy from Singletrack’s Premier Dealers, stockists and advertisers.

Tuesday Treats gives you a quality serving of independent bike retailing and a chance to win big in this week’s prize draw.

This week, we introduce: Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery.

Tuesday Treats brings you something refreshingly different (literally). The mountain bike mad guys at Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery recently graced the pages of our very own Issue 86. Here, Stu Taylor spills a few more … beers for good measure.

Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery is a Micro Brewery established in 2009 and situated in Kirkby Lonsdale (at the foot of the South Lakes where Cumbria, Lancashire and North Yorkshire meet, don’t you know).

We’re in the Old Station Yard, just on the outskirts of town. Here we brew a range of cracking cask beers in a variety of different styles from sessionable bitters, cloudy Wiess beer to Imperial IPAs at 8.2%. We’re also proud to have teamed up with the makers of some fine MTB material to create Singletrack Flowy Ale.

We have a small group of lads who work at the brewery, there’s (me) Head Brewer, JLO our Drayman/Brewer (you may spot him having a snooze in a layby!) joined by Andy in Sales and Ben, our part-time Brewer.

What’s the riding like on your doorstep?

Let us show you! We ride, right out of the backdoor of the brewery up and over Bullpot and into Barbondale. This can be a short blast or an epic hike-a-bike onto valley tops, depending how loud the pub is calling! We are also only a half hour away from Gisburn Forest which we regularly squeeze a ride in after a hard brew-day.

What’s hot, product-wise?

Our best selling beer is our Monumental Blonde 4.5%. It’s a citrusy, floral ale which we have been brewing for four years. Singletrack Flowy Ale is now doing rather well and in a very short space of time, we have already brewed over 25,000 pints to date.

Which product/brand does every staff member have on their bike?

The newest product I am testing on my ride is the Race Face narrow wide chain ring, which so far has performed superbly, with not a dropped chain in sight ridden in all types of terrain.

What was the last custom build you did?

Last Custom Build? Lets go Last Custom Brew! It just so happens we’re developing a second beer in the Singletrack series called ‘Singletrack Black’. This is a 4% Black IPA, brewed with a cracking selection of malts and a big charge of new world hops, giving a super smooth black ale with huge hop aromas, smooth hoppy mouth feel with hints of smoked malt. As Chipps says “Don’t be afraid of the dark”.

Next in the pipeline. KLB Singletrack ‘Black’ Ale

Tell us something about your shop/staff that no-one knows…

Since we started we have brewed 27 different beers. With all the beer names being linked somehow to the town or local area.
JLO our drayman has a fascination with RIM Ease!

How can we keep up to date with KLB?

We’re over on Facebook and Twitter.

Is there a regular shop ride or forthcoming event you think our readers should know about?

We ride on Thursday nights in and around the local trails and usually one of the days at a weekend with whoever we can or solo days out in them hillsup yonder. Keep your eyes out for more beers in the Singletrack series, with plans for a Singletrack ‘Double Black’ 8% Black IPA, in the pipeline. We also now have Singletrack Flowy Ale in bottles.

Lastly, remind us. What do Singletrack Premier Subscribers get from you guys?

For Singletrack readers specifically and to be redeemed at The Orange Tree Hotel in Kirkby Lonsdale, buy any 3 pints or bottles of KL Brewery beer and get 2 free.
