Zonhoven Superprestige grit

No Day at the Beach – Zonhoven Gallery

We had the relative pleasure of being guests of Ridley Bikes this weekend in Zonhoven, Belgium, home of the fabled Superprestige Zonhoven cyclocross race.
For starters, Ridley provided its fancy new X-Night SL to a select group of cycling journalists, allowing us the beautiful horror of doing several laps around the sandy course. You have probably heard how the famous ‘de Kuil’ sand pit, and its insanely steep and deep sandy descents and run-ups, is a shrine to the difficulty of cyclocross racing, but its fear-inducing (and technical) sandy chutes are even more difficult in practice.
Several of the aforementioned journalists were sent tumbling face-first into its gritty grasp, but it was a small price to pay for the honor of riding the course.
The races on Sunday were quite spectacular, with Nikki Harris being slightly edged out by Sanne Cant during a great race for the women. Then young Waut van Aert completely clobbered the men’s elite field.
Keep an eye on the web site here and in the printed magazine for more features from the weekend. In the meantime, here’s a gallery of images from the past few days.
