Welcome to CABCP: Gavere

This weekend saw the first real muddy race of the season at the Superprestige round in Gavere, Belgium. We’ve got a bundle of pictures showing just how brutal it was.

Nikki Harris has long been known for liking hard, muddy courses and the first such course allowed her to shine. The race at Gavere on Sunday had plenty of mud, and Harris, showing good form, finished second.

Tom Meeusen was showing great form, just a week after his win at Ruddervoorde. He was leading the race for the most part, but he ran out of steam and missed the podium by a handful of seconds.

Muddy, slow races always bring older riders to the fore. Bart Wellens, who is now rarely seen among the top ten, finished eighth.

Klaas Vantornout wins rarely but when he does, he wins big. The lanky Belgian can sometimes seem a bit whiny but on Sunday he didn’t need to find excuses.

On a day like Sunday, riders often change bikes twice a lap, so their pit crews have to make sure that they clean the bikes within 4-5 minutes. This would be a challenge even if everybody had their own pressure washer. Getting a free one is half the battle.

Don’t forget you can get more images just like these in the Cyclocross Album by visiting the Cyclephotos website and get a round up of last year’s season in the great coffee table book from the 13/14 season.
