Any ideas what tape I need to set my Scandal up tubeless please?

Have only even done tubeless before on my CX bike which has a proper tubeless ready wheelset!

I used wtb tape, they do them in appropriate sizes

Thanks…but what is an appropriate size?

i30 rim has an internal rim width of 30mm. WTB recommend using tape that is 3-5mm wider than that. So, you’re looking for tape that is 33-35mm wide.

IIRC, it’ll be a couple of mm wider than the internal, so probs 32 to 35. But if it’s a pre-made wheelset, are you sure they aren’t already taped?

Edit, fractions of a second late!

I think wtb rims are a fair bit ‘looser’ than others (that’s certainly my experience) so unless you’re using wtb tyres (which are tighter to match) consider a couple of wraps of tape.

Not directly related to your question but I have found i30 rims easy to damage. Same tyre and sorts of pressures as i ran on mavic rims without issue but I have put several dents in the rim. Still works fine, holds the bead/air but I have now Cush cored the back before I did any big damage.

I’ve also noticed that when those rims come taped from the factory, they usually have a narrow rim-strip left in the well of the rim, seems to make taping them easier as the well is pretty deep and narrow, and difficult to get the tape to conform to.

My i25s fine with tape narrower than the rim.

I used 33mm tape in WTB i29’s. One layer of tape works fine with Maxxis tyres.

I’ve used electrical tape on ours and they worked fine. Went up first time.

The i25’s on my Trig came pre-taped but the i30’s on my Whippet didn’t. I just used the same tape I’ve used for various sized rims, some stuff from ebay, and it’s worked fine. I can measure the width if you want?

I had no problems using these with the factory tape. If in doubt try inflate with the factory tape first, before thinking of taping them yourself, you may save yourself a lot of trouble.

I just used some Loctite tape I got in Halfords – previously I just used electrical tape.

I don’t worry about the width, just as long as it is wide ‘enough’, ie covers the centre section.

The WTB own brand tape is a Tesa strapping/packing alike tape – i.e. a non stretch type. It’s proper strong and no need for a double wrap. They recommend 35mm width on an i30 rim. I’m sure pretty much any other tape will work fine too though. Having used that tape a lot, i’d say make sure to tape it, then fit the tyre with a tube over night to press the tape right down and help prevent any sealant making its way under the edges later, and causing leaks.
