So, came of my bike last weekend downhilling at forest of dean. Landed on my wrist pretty bad, and went for an x-ray the following day. There was some markings on the scaphoid bone in the wrist, but no signs of a break, or at least the practitioner couldn’t find one. I was told to go back in 10days for another x-ray as it might show up then. I cancelled the X-ray yesterday, assuming that as there is no brake as I have most of the movement back but with some pain on the extremes of the movement of the wrist. There is a bit of pain when I press the bone, but nothing like it should hurt if it was broken. I’ve come the conclusion that its hopefully just a sprain and will be ok in a week or so, but it doesn’t seem to be getting any better…
How long to sprains usually take to heal? And should I be doing anything in the mean time? I assume people on here have broken wrist bones, does this sound familiar?

    Go and get the X-ray!!!

Often scaphoid bones don’t show a break on X-ray until they have started to heal.
If there is a break and you soldier on you stand the risk of a non-union (the bones don’t knit), this results in part of the scaphoid dying and you with serious wrist problem.

    Get it X-rayed.

Even if its not broken it can take months to fully heal. Ive done it lots of times, some movement back in a month, full movement may take a year.

You may need to stop using it to allow it to start to heal.

Did something similar with the most ridiculous, innoculous crash at Rogate DH yesterday. Somehow managed to stack it at low speed in the braking area at the end of one of the runs & now my wrist is killing me. Hurts when twisting so I’m assuming it’s a sprain.

Go to A&E where someone with medical qualifications can tell you what the injury is

go back. You just reminded me that I forgot to arrange a follow up X-ray from over a month ago. Wrist still hurts a bit.

Even if its just a sprain, it can still take a long time to heal.

I did the same. Went over the bars at speed and landed on my wrist. The x-ray showed it was ‘just’ a sprain, but a bad one. It took a lot longer than a week before I was back on the bike

When you do get back on, I’d strongly recommend you get a pair of 661 wrist guards. They’ll give you that bit of extra support, and confidence. I found my wrist was a bit weak, and would just sort of fold without them for a while

Don’t go to A&E, call up and get another X-ray arranged.

    Arrange another x-ray.

tbh, tendons etc always take longer to heal than bones anyway so I’d expect a significant injury to take 2+ months to return to normal (more now I’m over 45…)

I had exactly the same thing after I came off the bike in morzine over the summer. I was thinking of going for an x-ray but convinced myself it was a sprain. my bone hurt in the same way you describe. I would maybe have liked the x-ray for peace of mind but now it is absolutely fine. it took about a month before I could do anything strenuous with it (I’m 20). I would highly recommend getting a splint or something for some support though because it is easy to over do it. Also if you are unsure if you can do something with it, don’t. I made it worse again on a couple of occasions

X ray, my scaphoid fracture went undetected for over a year and formed a cyst too, I’ve now got a screw in it, go private if you can, I can recommend Mr Compson based out of the Lister in Chelsea, he specialises in wrist fractures. Good luck.

Just booked an Xray for next Wednesday. Better safe than sorry as you guys say.
Do those 661 guards proved protection as well as support? A metal/plastic brace or something?
Did a track session on the road bike yday, and while it was uncomfortable it was bearable. Did 30 or so miles with out to much pain.
I have a splint thing, but I;ve not been wearing it 🙁

The 661 guards have a plastic plate/brace in them to give you support and protection. They’re not as obtrusive as they look. Not uncomfortable at all, but make a huge difference, support-wise
